Manchester United prepares to face Newcastle United on Wednesday, with Michael Carrick aiming to solidify third place in the Premier League. The team staged a comeback to defeat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Sunday, thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ penalty and Benjamin Sesko’s goal, boosting their Champions League qualification push.
Casemiro Identifies His Successor
Outgoing midfielder Casemiro has recommended Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes as his replacement for Manchester United this summer. The club confirmed in January that Casemiro departs when his contract expires on June 30.
Other midfield targets include Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Wolves’ Joao Gomes. Sources indicate Casemiro specifically endorsed his compatriot Guimaraes.
Newcastle negotiates a new contract with Guimaraes, complicating any move. United has held informal contact with Guimaraes and Tonali, but no transfer terms are agreed. A deal for Guimaraes could surpass the £125 million Newcastle received for Alexander Isak last summer.
Casemiro’s deal includes an extension option, but the club declined to activate it. With under six months remaining, he can sign pre-contracts with overseas clubs.
Sesko Emerges as Ronaldo-Like Talent
Benjamin Sesko has transformed his season under Carrick, scoring six goals in his last seven league matches after a slow start following his move from RB Leipzig. His strikes against Everton, West Ham, Fulham, and Brighton in the FA Cup highlight his growing impact.
Former Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart compares Sesko to Cristiano Ronaldo. On Match of the Day, Hart stated: “Young striker, and he’s got such brilliance, you know, a little bit of Cristiano Ronaldo about him. And [Bruno] Fernandes knows how to get the best out of him. He knows how to get into the goal-scoring positions.”
United legend Gary Neville praises Sesko’s improvement. On Sky Sports, Neville said: “Sesko, the confidence, the goals. The finishes by the way that he’s put in, the West Ham [one], the Everton [one]. The goals, they’re four brilliant goals by the way. They’re all different. They’re all very different goals. One across the near post, one a header, one is a counter-attack with a side finish at the end. And then the Fulham one is the one on the turn.”
Neville added: “What he [Carrick] seems to have done in the four or five weeks whilst having him [Sesko] as a sub is bring him on and then he [Sesko] had an angry celebration against Everton. That was a celebration of a guy who was saying, ‘You better play me by the way, now’ and he has done. So I think now he’s working Sesko into form. That’s a game changer for United.”
