Colchester United head coach Danny Cowley plans to integrate several young players into the starting lineup for the team’s final League Two match against Cheltenham Town at the EV Charger Points Stadium.
Boosting Youth Development
Cowley highlighted the potential within his squad’s younger contingent. “We have the opportunity to freshen the group up with some of our younger players,” he stated. “I think that will be good for them.”
He pointed to recent breakthroughs, including Kyreece Lisbie in the first half of the season and Frankie Terry in the second half. Cowley also praised Sam Kuffour’s athletic display during his substitute appearance last Saturday, adding excitement for the future.
Several academy players returned from successful loan spells at non-league clubs last week. Kien Connolly featured prominently at Step 3 and Step 2 levels with Dagenham and Redbridge. Max Jolliffe competed at Step 1 with Yeovil and Step 2 with Salisbury, while Ronnie Harvey played at Step 2. Frankie Edwards logged nearly 40 games for Hornchurch, now headed to the play-offs, and Milton Oni remains part of a National League South play-off squad.
“For our young players, I think there’s been some good progress and they’ve been well supported by the senior boys,” Cowley noted.
Aiming for Strong Finish
Colchester seeks to rebound from two consecutive defeats, with a victory potentially securing a 10th-place finish. “It’s a game that we’re looking forward to,” Cowley said. “We still have the opportunity to finish 10th.”
Despite mid-table challenges around game 45, motivation remains high. “It’s still all to play for and there’s still the potential of a 10th place finish, which I think has found the motivation this week and we’re looking to really attack the game,” he added. “We want to find a good performance and finish in a good way.”
The season presented numerous hurdles, particularly with player availability. Cowley reflected on high hopes in January with players like Micah Mbick and Ellis Iandolo, but injuries disrupted consistency. “The season has brought many challenges, not least in terms of availability,” he explained. “We haven’t had the availability – that’s been the challenge and without them, we haven’t quite found the consistency.”
