Tech Professional’s Unique Approach to Recharging

A 32-year-old New York City resident has developed a distinctive method for combating boredom and burnout: monthly day trips to Walt Disney World. Sydney Stinner, who works in the technology sector, travels from Manhattan to Orlando, Florida, for a few hours at the theme park before flying back to New York on the same day. This solo excursion, undertaken once a month, has drawn both admiration and criticism.

The Logistics of a Disney Day Trip

Stinner explains that multi-day vacations to Disney are often impractical due to her demanding work schedule and limited paid time off. Her first solo day trip occurred in September 2025, and she quickly became dedicated to the practice. “I just wanted a few hours in my happy place,” Stinner shared. “I figured out the logistics and realized how easy it actually was.” She emphasizes the importance of prioritizing activities that bring personal joy, even if they are brief.

This year, Stinner has set a goal to complete one solo Disney day trip each month. She describes Disney as a sanctuary where she can completely disconnect from daily stressors. “There is so much going on in the world and in life, and when I walk through those gates none of it follows me in,” she stated. “Disney has this magic where you cannot help but smile the entire time you’re there – and I think as an adult that is actually really rare and really valuable.”

Balancing Time, Budget, and Well-being

According to Stinner, these one-day excursions offer a strategic advantage, saving her both time and money. They fit seamlessly into her schedule without encroaching on her vacation days or budget. “There’s actually something really freeing about it. I’m in my own bed that night, recovered by the next morning, and I already have my next trip on the calendar,” she noted.

Her typical day begins with a 4 a.m. wake-up call to catch an early morning flight from New York, usually departing around 6 a.m. and arriving in Orlando before 9 a.m. By 9:30 a.m., she aims to be through the park gates, often staying until 7 or 8 p.m. to catch one of the last flights home. This allows for approximately eight to nine hours within the parks, with her returning to her New York apartment by 1 a.m. at the latest. While acknowledging the demanding nature of such a trip, Stinner insists the benefits significantly outweigh the temporary fatigue.

Financial Considerations and Travel Challenges

Regarding expenses, Stinner mentioned that prior to the discontinuation of Spirit Airlines’ operations, she was able to secure round-trip flights for approximately $50. Currently, she relies more heavily on travel points for affordable airfare. Beyond flights, her spending typically ranges from $200 to $250 for food, beverages, and transportation to and from airports. As an annual passholder, her park admission is covered.

Stinner has encountered occasional travel disruptions. In January, a snowstorm in New York led to the cancellation of her return flight, forcing a rebooking for a later departure that significantly reduced her park time. This experience served as a reminder to avoid traveling during inclement weather.

Embracing Solo Travel and Addressing Criticism

To prevent monotony, Stinner often adopts a theme for her visits. For instance, during Women’s History Month in March, she focused on rides inspired by female characters or designed by female Imagineers. She finds solo travel liberating, allowing her to set her own pace and pursue her interests without compromise.

Stinner has been sharing her experiences on TikTok, where she has encountered criticism. “I think there are a lot of people who don’t understand why I do this, or think I should be traveling to other places instead,” she commented. “But I think everyone needs to find something that makes them as happy as Disney makes me.”

She advocates for mutual support in pursuing personal happiness, stating, “I don’t expect Disney to be that place for everyone, and I don’t expect everyone to understand it – but I do think everyone should find the things that bring them that kind of joy, and be supportive of other people for doing the same.”

Stinner also clarifies that these day trips do not preclude other travel. She has upcoming plans for a ten-day trip to Italy and an annual solo visit to Paris, noting that the Disney day trips enable her to satisfy an immediate desire for a getaway without depleting the time and budget needed for longer, more extensive vacations.
