February’s dreary weather persists, but spring hints emerge. Damp conditions continue, complicating outdoor laundry drying. Even brief sunny spells risk sudden rain, forcing clothes indoors. Without a tumble dryer or heated airer, a clothes airer offers an energy-efficient solution. Clothes dry slowly without heat, but experts reveal a simple towel trick to accelerate the process without raising energy costs.
The Towel Roll Method for Quicker Drying
Wrap wet garments in a dry towel to extract excess moisture before hanging. This step significantly shortens drying time indoors.
Laundry specialists recommend the towel roll technique: Roll damp clothes tightly in one or more dry towels to absorb water, then add paper towels for enhanced extraction. Separate items like clean linens when handling multiple pieces.
“Start by taking each piece of clothing from its damp state and rolling it tightly inside one single dry towel,” the experts advise. “Once that’s done, twist both ends of the towel—ensuring that it’s tightly twisted to guarantee that it successfully squeezes excess water. Insert some sheets of paper towels into the creases that were created during folding-in so any additional drops get soaked away too.”
Inspect results after squeezing. If moisture lingers, reduce items per towel and repeat for optimal dryness.
Drying Bed Sheets Indoors Efficiently
Martin Seeley, sleep expert and CEO of MattressNextDay, endorses this method for bed sheets, ideal during cold, wet weather when outdoor lines fail.
“I always recommend drying your bedding indoors or using a tumble dryer to keep it pollen-free,” Seeley states. “If you’re worried about your bed sheets taking a while to dry, I’d recommend washing them first thing in the morning so you can take advantage of warmer temperatures and natural airflow throughout the day.”
Shake sheets vigorously before hanging to separate fibers and boost airflow. For the towel trick: Lay the damp sheet flat on a dry towel, roll tightly together, and press to remove moisture, then hang to complete drying.
These hacks cut indoor drying times dramatically, keeping laundry fresh effortlessly.
