Dudley MP Sonia Kumar has urged the council to establish a household waste recycling centre (HWRC) in the north of the borough, emphasizing that waste disposal services are essential rather than a luxury.
MP’s Push for Immediate Solutions
The MP wrote to council leader Cllr Patrick Harley, highlighting the current single HWRC on Birmingham Street in Stourbridge. She noted that proposed plans for a new centralized facility fail to tackle residents’ immediate needs.
“Temporary or ‘pop-up’ waste facilities previously operated successfully in the north of the borough and were both well used and welcomed by local residents,” Ms Kumar stated.
She calls for reinstating regular accessible facilities in the north, with pop-up tips serving as an interim measure.
Council’s Response and Budget Plans
Cllr Damian Corfield, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and Sedgley ward representative, addressed concerns at a January Communities and Growth Scrutiny Committee meeting. He confirmed a strategic review of HWRC provision, with budget funding allocated for a northern Dudley site.
“There is funding in the budget to provide HWRC provision of some sort… the importance of having provision in the north is key,” Cllr Corfield said. He hopes to implement it within the financial year, though no exact date is set.
