Energy Secretary Faces Pressure Over 2030 Car Ban

Ed Miliband, the current Energy Secretary, is facing calls to uphold the government’s commitment to phasing out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars, despite growing demands for a review of the 2030 ban. Miliband oversees the UK’s Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, a key policy designed to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and meet the nation’s net-zero targets.

Under the ZEV mandate, car manufacturers are required to produce an increasing percentage of electric vehicles each year, with a target of 33% of output set for 2026. This quota is set to rise progressively until new petrol and diesel models, with limited exemptions, are no longer sold.

Industry and Politicians Seek Policy Reassessment

In recent weeks, the ZEV mandate has encountered significant opposition. Organizations such as the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), alongside several politicians, have advocated for a comprehensive review of the current regulations. The Business and Trade Committee has also penned an open letter to the Department for Transport, ing concerns that the ZEV mandate, in its current form, presents substantial risks to the UK automotive sector.

EV Experts Advocate for Policy Stability

However, experts in the electric vehicle sector are urging government officials to resist pressure for immediate policy changes. Tanya Sinclair, CEO of Electric Vehicles UK, emphasized the need for consistency, stating, “Government doesn’t need to rewrite the ZEV Mandate every few months. It needs to hold its nerve. The targets are set. The direction is clear. Now let the companies investing billions into EVs, batteries, charging and UK jobs get on with delivering the transition.”

Sinclair further cautioned that frequent policy adjustments and signals of reconsideration can foster hesitation rather than confidence. “Every time ministers tweak policy, dilute commitments or signal another rethink, they don’t create confidence, they create hesitation. Among motorists certainly, But, also among the manufacturers, investors and supply chain businesses deciding where to place the next generation of capital technology and employment. Consistency is now the policy, The industry needs stability, not another round of uncertainty.”

Economic and Security Benefits of Electrification Highlighted

Ginny Buckley, chief executive of Electrifying.com, echoed these sentiments, warning against abandoning the policy. “The real risk to Britain’s car industry isn’t the transition to electric cars, it’s hesitating at the crossroads,” Buckley commented. She added that consistent messaging is crucial for car buyers and that, in the current climate of global instability and rising energy costs, a firm commitment to electrification represents the most astute economic and energy security decision for Britain.

Buckley stressed, “Car buyers need consistent messaging, not policy wobbles and at a time when global instability is pushing up energy costs and prices at the pumps, doubling down on electrification is the smartest economic and energy security decision Britain can make.”
