Separate Case: AI Error Leads to Wrongful Arrest of Innocent Grandmother
In a contrasting incident, a 50-year-old grandmother endured four months in jail after an AI system erroneously flagged her as a suspect in a North Dakota bank fraud case.
Angela Lipps, a mother of three and grandmother of five from Tennessee, faced arrest at gunpoint in her home while babysitting her grandchildren. The AI alert originated from a Fargo investigation 1,700 kilometers away, despite Lipps never visiting the state.
Investigators dismissed her protests of innocence, classifying her as a fugitive due to the interstate nature of the case. She remained in a Tennessee county jail without bail for four months.
Lipps recounted: “While imprisoned, I couldn’t pay my bills. I lost everything: my home, my car, and even my dog.” She now works to rebuild her life.
