Fabio Fognini Trades Tennis Rackets for Dance Shoes After Wimbledon Counsel
Former Grand Slam champion Fabio Fognini has embarked on a new career path, trading the famed grass courts of Wimbledon for the glittering world of ballroom dancing. This transition comes after a pivotal moment at the prestigious tournament last year, where tennis legend John McEnroe suggested Fognini consider retirement.
The decision marks Fognini’s first absence from Wimbledon in 17 years. His wife, Flavia Pennetta, a former US Open champion herself, echoed McEnroe’s sentiment, though she emphasized that the ultimate choice rested with the Italian player.
A Memorable Wimbledon Farewell
Last year, the 39-year-old Fognini delivered a remarkable performance against Carlos Alcaraz in the opening round. He pushed the eventual champion to a thrilling final set, winning the second and fourth sets in a display that impressed many, including McEnroe.
During his commentary, McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam winner, remarked on the intensity of the match. “This was the perfect ending for Fognini,” he stated. “Luckily for Alcaraz, towards the end of the fourth set, the crowd realised that Fognini was playing unbelievable. Carlos looked more tired than Fognini even though there’s a 16-year age gap! What in the hell is going on here? So the crowd started rallying behind Alcaraz and that picked him up a little bit. I almost hope that [Fognini] doesn’t play anymore because I’m not sure he can play any better than that.”
Wife’s Support and Fognini’s New Venture
Pennetta, who retired from professional tennis in 2015 and is now a mother of three with Fognini, supported the advice. Reflecting on her husband’s potential retirement, she told Corriere della Sera: “I hope he finishes with the wonderful feelings of the match with Alcaraz. He was very good, I am proud; for me it is as if he had won. If he were to continue he would risk ruining that moment.”
When asked about Fognini seeking her counsel, Pennetta explained: “In his own way. I am his mirror. I do not lie to him. But the choice is his.”
Shortly after these discussions, Fognini announced his retirement from professional tennis. He then surprised many by participating in the Italian version of the popular television show “Dancing With the Stars.” Fognini secured a third-place finish on the program, describing the experience as a temporary but fulfilling new career.
A New Chapter Unfolds
“I learned a new job because, in the end, it was my job for three months,” Fognini shared. “I met fantastic people and presented myself in a way that was unfamiliar. And as if that weren’t enough, I also won, so I’m happy to show that side of Fabio Fognini that few knew.”
He further elaborated on his experience, stating: “It wasn’t just dance; it was a journey within myself. I’ve discovered a new Fabio, I’ve taken off the armour. Third place is worth a gold medal. My wife Flavia Pennetta believed in it before I did.””
