Tragic Heatwave Incident Claims Lives of Two Young Brothers
In a devastating turn of events during a severe heatwave in southern France, two young brothers, aged four and two, have died after being left in a car. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the community, occurred on Monday in Carpentras, in the south of France.
Morning Outing Turns to Tragedy
According to accounts from the boys’ family, their mother, Wafa El Boubkari, 33, had taken her sons, Kassim Benouali and Sadek, swimming in the morning to escape the oppressive heat. Following the swimming session, she reportedly took the children to a supermarket for groceries.
Upon returning to their grandmother’s home in the Bois de l’Ubac area, Ms. El Boubkari began unloading the shopping from her white Peugeot. Tragically, the boys were left in the vehicle and were discovered unresponsive approximately ten minutes later, having succumbed to cardiac arrest.
Conflicting Accounts Emerge
While initially stating she became busy unpacking groceries and subsequently ‘forgot’ about the children, Ms. El Boubkari has reportedly told police that the boys climbed into the back of the car without her knowledge and that the doors automatically locked, preventing their escape. She claims she was inside the house attending to daily chores at the time.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths. Ms. El Boubkari faces charges of unintentional manslaughter, a serious offense that can carry a prison sentence of up to 15 years, or 20 years with aggravating circumstances.
Family and Friends Speak Out Amid Grief
The boys’ grandmother, Fatiha, described the event as a “tragedy” and a “terrible heatwave,” emphasizing that it was a “genuine mistake” and “nothing illegal has happened.” She stated, “Everybody has been struggling to focus in this heat, she got busy, and my daughter was also dealing with a lot of other things in her life.”
Family members and friends have also indicated that Ms. El Boubkari had been under significant emotional pressure, having recently separated from her husband and moved into her mother’s home with her four children about six months prior. A sister, who wished to remain anonymous, conveyed that Ms. El Boubkari is “in a bad way, she’s barely able to speak” and is overwhelmed by the loss of her sons.
A friend revealed that Ms. El Boubkari had only been living with her mother for a few months and was grappling with personal difficulties. “Who knows? She may have been distracted by all the other things going on in her life,” the friend commented.
Record Temperatures and Further Tragedies
The incident occurred as France, and much of Western Europe, experienced unprecedented heat, with temperatures soaring due to a hot air mass from the Sahara. On Tuesday, France registered its hottest day on record at 44.3C, with nighttime temperatures averaging around 30C. The interior of the car is estimated to have reached temperatures as high as 70C without air conditioning.
This tragic event is not isolated. Another French child died in similar circumstances on Wednesday in Saint-Gratien, north of Paris, after being left in a car. Additionally, an 18-month-old baby died in a car on the Aix-Marseille University medical campus on Monday.
The intense heatwave also led to the closure of attractions like the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower due to buildings not being sufficiently adapted to the climate. Tragically, around 40 people across France have also been confirmed to have drowned while swimming in unsupervised areas during the extreme weather.
Community Mourns Young Lives Lost
The funeral for Kassim and Sadek took place on Friday, with emotional scenes observed as mourners gathered for prayers at Carpentras Mosque before proceeding to a local cemetery where the brothers were laid to rest together.
Colleagues at La Maison Jounaud, a patisserie where Ms. El Boubkari has worked for approximately five years, have expressed their condolences. A colleague described her as “a very nice, hardworking, down to earth woman who was dealing with a lot of things” and “a very good mother who was doing her best.”
Neighbors expressed difficulty understanding how such a prolonged period could pass without the children being noticed, even within a large house. The investigation aims to ascertain the full details of the events leading to this heartbreaking loss.
