Australian acting veteran Gary Sweet opened up about a deeply personal family revelation during a recent episode of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Australia. The 68-year-old star shared with his campmates that he grew up believing his aunt and uncle were his biological parents, marking the first time he has publicly discussed this aspect of his life.
Discovering Family Ties
Sweet explained the unusual circumstances surrounding his upbringing. His father’s family included eight siblings, with Bill and Phil being the closest in age. Bill and his wife, who already had four daughters, faced a divorce while she was pregnant. That child was Sweet himself.
“Would you like to hear something weird?” Sweet asked his fellow contestants before diving into the story. He noted that his biological parents effectively became his uncle and aunt, while his sisters turned into cousins in his new family dynamic.
Raised by his aunt and uncle in Adelaide, Sweet viewed the arrangement positively. “It’s a good thing to grow up with people who really, really wanted you that badly,” he reflected. The aunt’s inability to have children of her own made the adoption a meaningful choice for the family.
Moving Forward and Limited Discussions
In 1980, Sweet relocated to Melbourne to pursue his acting career. He occasionally visited his biological father but rarely broached the subject. “When I moved to Melbourne, I used to see my biological father quite a bit,” Sweet said. “It never really came up. Um, occasionally, if he was drunk, he’d say stuff about it.”
The actor emphasized that he had never shared this story publicly before, highlighting the private nature of his family history.
Building His Own Legacy
Sweet has built a substantial family of his own, fathering six children across three relationships. He shares son Frank and daughter Sophie with former partner Jill Miller, sons Jesse James and Joe Buster with ex-wife Johanna Griggs, and younger sons Frederic and Percy with current partner Nadia Dyall.
In 2018, he welcomed his first grandchild, Jax, born to son Joe and his partner Katie Buttel.
