Gillian Anderson Steps into Unique Role at Marks & Spencer
Marks & Spencer appoints actress Gillian Anderson as its first Chief Compliments Officer (CCO) to celebrate customer outfits and spread positivity through fashion.
In a new announcement video, Anderson sits at a large office desk and declares, “We all need more compliments. As such, I have taken a new position as Chief Compliments Officer of M&S.”
Campaign Focuses on Power of Compliments
The role forms part of M&S’s latest initiative highlighting how compliments boost confidence and foster connections. As CCO, Anderson champions affirmation, positivity, and personal style, encouraging customers to embrace their individuality.
The campaign stems from a popular social media series launched last year, where strangers exchanged small affirmations like “Love That.” Viewers adopted the phrase, leading M&S to expand it into a broader effort targeting Britons’ reluctance to give or receive praise.
Research commissioned by M&S reveals that 62 percent of people feel instantly happier upon receiving a compliment, though 8 percent report never getting one.
Teaser Sparks Celebrity Speculation
Prior to the reveal, M&S posted a cryptic teaser showing a woman writing “Love That” on branded paper. Fans speculated on the identity, suggesting names like Kate Moss, Claudia Winkleman, Fearne Cotton, Sienna Miller, and Trinny Woodall based on the handwriting.
Anderson’s Thoughts on the Role
Anderson shares positivity online, including via a new LinkedIn account. She states, “A simple compliment can genuinely boost confidence and change how someone feels all day, so as Chief Compliments Officer, I’m here to help make those moments more commonplace.”
“Having spent my career playing women in positions of power, complexity and contradiction, I’ve become very deliberate about how I dress so when someone pays me a compliment it means a lot,” she adds. “Not necessarily because it’s about how I look but because I dress in a way that feels honest to who I am and when someone recognizes that, it is affirming.”
She emphasizes that a genuine compliment about attire can transform one’s demeanor, whether on a red carpet or daily errands.
M&S’s Recent Success
Anderson has voiced M&S Food’s Christmas campaigns alongside stars like Olivia Colman and Eddie Redmayne. She previously starred in ads for Dreams beds and Dune London’s Spring/Summer 2020 footwear.
M&S faced challenges in 2020, cutting 7,000 jobs amid Covid impacts, but staged a turnaround. It reported record pre-tax profits of £716.4 million in 2023/24, up from £453.3 million, and ranks among the UK’s top brands for the fourth straight year.
