Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine mentioned Sunday that he believes there could be bipartisan opposition to the usage of American forces as a part of an effort to take Greenland.

“I feel Congress will cease him, each Democrats and Republicans,” the Virginia senator mentioned on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”

President Trump has lengthy signaled he needs an American takeover of the world’s largest island, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. He doubled down on Jan. 9, saying “I wish to make a deal the simple approach, but when we do not do it the simple approach, we will do it the onerous approach.”

Kaine mentioned neither choice could be acceptable. He cited Denmark’s lengthy historical past as a NATO ally.

“We’re not going to do it the onerous approach, and we’re not gonna do it the simple approach both. We’ll proceed to work with Denmark as a sovereign nation that we’re allied with, and we’re not going to deal with them as an adversary or as an enemy,” Kaine mentioned.

Leaders in each Denmark and Greenland have decried Mr. Trump’s plan. Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and 4 get together leaders mentioned in an announcement Friday night time that, “We do not need to be People, we do not need to be Danes, we need to be Greenlanders.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has warned that an American takeover of Greenland would mark the tip of the 76-year-old NATO alliance. Kaine echoed these feedback Sunday on “Face the Nation.”

“This may be disastrous. It would not simply be America first, it would not simply be the tip of NATO, it might be America alone. If we take our greatest allies—and Denmark has been an ally for a really very long time,” Kaine mentioned, predicting the U.S. could be “remoted as a pariah.”

Kaine mentioned he has talked to Republican colleagues who’re in settlement that the specter of U.S. army motion in Greenland must be off the desk.

“I can let you know this, we are going to pressure a vote within the Senate about no U.S. army motion in Greenland or Denmark,” Kaine mentioned. “If we have to, we are going to get overwhelming bipartisan assist that this president is silly to even counsel this.”
