Greg James, the 40-year-old Radio 1 Breakfast DJ, has completed the first day of his grueling 1000km tandem bike ride for Comic Relief. He shared that his intense training regimen drew motivation from the steamy TV series Heated Rivalry and Harry Styles’ latest single Aperture.
Training Insights
James kicked off his solo cycling challenge from Weymouth in Dorset, aiming for Edinburgh. He described his preparation as relentless, stating, “I have been training really hard on my bicycle from about Christmas, and every day has been leg day. It’s been a f***ing nightmare. But it’s all for a good cause and totally worth it.”
To push through the tough sessions, he relied on entertainment: “I’ve done thousands of miles, either out in the real world or on a bike in the spare room with a laptop propped up watching Heated Rivalry. The song I just can’t stop listening to is Aperture by Harry Styles. I’ve also got a lot of Chemical Brothers because that’s just nice, upbeat, good dance music.”
Support from Colleagues
Vernon Kay, Sara Cox, Jo Whiley, and Scott Mills have rallied behind him with encouragement. Jamie Laing and Mollie King, fresh from their own endurance feats, provided valuable tips.
Personal Challenges
The ride follows a difficult week for James, as his father, known as ‘big Al,’ suffered a stroke during a planned heart operation last Friday. James canceled his show to stay with family but returned to work on Monday, noting his father is “doing okay and is still with us.”
He updated listeners: “Thank you to Sam and Danni for Friday, as there was a slight mishap with my dad. My dad’s not very well at the minute. I know that he would want me to get back on the show. And he’s still with us, which is good!”
James emphasized his father’s resilience: “He’s fighting hard and would be taking small steps on the road back to recovery.” Reflecting on the ordeal, he said, “I’ve had a terrible time. My dad’s not very well. Not very well at all. And it’s horrible.”
During a hospital visit over the weekend, James praised the NHS staff: “Particularly the handsome doctor that he’s having by his bedside.” He added a light-hearted note: “That’s one of the mad things about life, is that sometimes the best thing is to be in a WhatsApp group where you’re just talking about how fit the doctor is. And that’s really helped.”
Despite the family health crisis, James remains committed to the Comic Relief challenge, pressing forward with determination.
