Sydney Functions Centre Targeted in Drive-By Shooting
A brazen daylight attack occurred at a Sydney function centre on Saturday afternoon, where a private memorial service was being held for a slain underworld figure. An individual in a sport utility vehicle unleashed a barrage of gunfire at the venue, according to footage and police reports.
Details of the Incident
The incident unfolded at Diamond Venues in Punchbowl, a suburb in Sydney’s southwest, around 2:20 PM. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots. The service was for Lorenzo Lemalu, 24, identified as a senior figure in the Coconut Cartel. While dozens of shots were reportedly fired from an AK-47, no injuries were reported at the scene.
Footage captured by an associate showed a hooded man in an SUV firing at the building. The accomplice was heard urging the gunman to continue firing before the vehicle sped away. Law enforcement officials were alerted to the incident shortly after it occurred.
Investigation Underway
Crime scenes were established at the function centre and a separate location in the same suburb, where an abandoned SUV was discovered engulfed in flames a short time later. Preliminary investigations suggest a connection between the two locations, according to police statements.
Windows at the function centre showed signs of bullet damage, and spent casings were observed in the car park. The shooting has caused concern among local residents.
Background of the Deceased
Lorenzo Lemalu’s body was returned to Australia this week, following his execution in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, two weeks prior. He was known as a former associate of the Alameddine crime family and a senior leader of the Coconut Cartel. Another associate of the Coconut Cartel, Sam Sauni, 27, was reportedly seriously injured in a separate incident in Vietnam but survived.
Funeral Arrangements and Safety Concerns
Following the shooting, the memorial service for Lorenzo Lemalu has been relocated to Lakemba Mosque due to safety concerns expressed by the management of Diamond Venues. A funeral and burial are scheduled to take place at Lakemba Mosque on Sunday, with a significant police presence anticipated.
It is understood that a traditional overnight wake, a Polynesian custom, was cancelled by authorities due to safety considerations, according to reports The Daily Telegraph.
Underworld Feud Context
Lemalu was previously associated with Proper 60, a gang based in western Sydney linked to the Alameddine family. It is believed he had a falling out with the Alameddine syndicate after leaving Australia approximately four years ago, subsequently leading the Coconut Cartel’s operations from Southeast Asia. The Coconut Cartel is reportedly a rival faction to the Alameddines, engaged in a dispute over control of the Sydney drug trade, which has led to a series of violent incidents across the city in recent months.
Two Samoan nationals have been charged in Vietnam in connection with Lemalu’s death, with authorities alleging they acted under the direction of an individual overseas.
