Homeland Safety Secretary Kristi Noem mentioned Sunday that “we have not taken something off the desk” when requested about increasing immigration enforcement operations to cities all through the U.S.

“I believe there’s a variety of cities which can be coping with crime and violence proper now. And so, we have not taken something off the desk. We have been ensuring that we’ve got the assets and the tools to go in,” Noem mentioned on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”

CBS Information reported final week that Immigration and Customs Enforcement is planning to develop its operations to Chicago within the coming days, mirroring the immigration arrest operation seen in Los Angeles earlier this yr.

Noem mentioned Sunday that there is been “ongoing operations with ICE in Chicago and all through Illinois and different states, ensuring that we’re upholding our legal guidelines.” However she acknowledged that “we do intend so as to add extra assets to these operations.”

Although she would not disclose particulars of the operation for the safety of the legislation enforcement on the bottom, Noem mentioned “we are going to proceed to go after the worst of the worst throughout the nation, like President Trump has advised us to do.”

The Trump administration has set its sights on a lot of cities that restrict native cooperation with federal immigration brokers in current months, bringing lawsuits towards the so-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions and pursuing different technique of intervention. Noem’s feedback additionally come because the president has zeroed in on combating crime within the nation’s main cities, starting with an effort in Washington, D.C., in current weeks whereas he teased broader efforts elsewhere.

Earlier this month, Mr. Trump federalized the District of Columbia’s Metropolitan Police Division and deployed the Nationwide Guard to the district to help legislation enforcement. Whereas the president has distinctive authority over the D.C. Nationwide Guard as a result of the district is managed by the federal authorities, his deployment of the Nationwide Guard in Los Angeles in June amid heated protests over immigration raids prompted a lawsuit from the California’s Democratic governor, who didn’t approve of the usage of his state’s Guard forces.

On Sunday, Noem deferred to Mr. Trump when requested whether or not Nationwide Guard troops could be current in Chicago alongside the immigration enforcement operation, like they had been in Los Angeles, saying “that all the time is a prerogative of President Trump and his determination.” DHS sources advised CBS Information final week that the immigration enforcement plans had been separate from Mr. Trump’s risk in current weeks to deploy the Nationwide Guard to Chicago to combat crime within the metropolis.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has pushed again on the administration’s threats to intervene on crime in Chicago. And in an interview for “Face the Nation” Friday, he accused Noem of “inflaming passions and inflicting disruption that does not have to be brought about” with an immigration enforcement posture that he referred to as “harmful” and “un-American.”

“We’ve those who have lived, sure within the state of Illinois and town of Chicago for many years, working right here, paying taxes,” Pritzker mentioned. “They’re legislation abiding members of our communities, pals, neighbors, and why are we arresting them? Why are we making them disappear?”

Pritzker urged that Chicago is succeeding in combating violent crime, saying when the Trump administration opts to “convey folks in and do not coordinate with us, they’ll trigger monumental issues.” However Noem argued that the governor, “if he has one homicide within the metropolis of Chicago,” must be reaching out to the president and asking, “‘What’s your concepts? What can we do?'”

In the meantime, Noem inspired different leaders of main U.S. cities to work with the White Home to make their cities safer. Pritzker famous to “Face the Nation” that his administration already does “a variety of work” with federal legislation enforcement such because the FBI and ATF.

“I would encourage each single huge metropolis, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, no matter they’re, in the event that they wish to assist make their metropolis safer, extra affluent, permit folks the chance to stroll in freedom, just like the folks of Washington, D.C., are actually, and having fun with going out to eat at evening and never having to fret if they’ll be a sufferer of a carjacking or a theft, they need to name us,” she mentioned.

Requested whether or not there are plans to pursue comparable operations in Republican-controlled cities in purple states, Noem mentioned, “completely.”

“Each single metropolis is evaluated for what we have to do there to make it safer,” Noem mentioned. “We completely should not wanting by the perspective at something we’re doing with a political lens.”
