The state of Illinois and Chicago are suing the Trump administration over their plans to deploy the Nationwide Guard.
“The American individuals, no matter the place they reside, shouldn’t stay below the specter of occupation by the USA army, significantly not just because their metropolis or state management has fallen out of a president’s favor,” the lawsuit states in its introduction.
Within the lawsuit, which names each the state of Illinois and town of Chicago as plaintiffs, Illinois Lawyer Common Kwame Raoul writes, “Defendants’ deployment of federalized troops to Illinois is patently illegal.” He continues, “Plaintiffs ask this courtroom to halt the unlawful, harmful, and unconstitutional federalization of members of the Nationwide Guard of the USA, together with each the Illinois and Texas Nationwide Guard.”
Over the weekend, a federal memo obtained by CBS Information revealed as much as 300 members of the Illinois Nationwide Guard could be federalized and deployed to “defend federal property” and “authorities personnel performing federal features.”
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker confirmed that memo and mentioned he had additionally been advised a further 400 different Nationwide Guard members from Texas could be deployed to Chicago and Portland, Oregon.
A federal choose quickly blocked the deployment of the Nationwide Guard to Portland on Sunday.
