Arrival and Decision to Stay

Fatemah Pasandideh and Atefeh Ramezanisadeh arrived in Australia in late February with Iran’s team for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Concerns arose for their safety after they refused to sing the national anthem during a live broadcast before a match against South Korea on the Gold Coast.

Iranian state media labeled the players as ‘traitors’ amid heightened tensions. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke offered humanitarian visas to seven delegation members before their departure. While the others returned home, Pasandideh and Ramezanisadeh chose to stay.

Pasandideh has been training with Brisbane Roar FC’s A-League Women’s squad, signaling their intent to pursue professional opportunities locally.

Joint Statement of Thanks

In a recent joint statement, the players expressed profound appreciation to the Australian government and Minister Burke for providing humanitarian protection.

“We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the Australian Government, and particularly Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke, for granting us humanitarian protection and a safe haven in this beautiful country,” the statement reads. “The compassion and support shown to us during this challenging time has provided us with hope for a future where we can live and compete in safety.”

They also thanked dedicated Home Affairs officials and highlighted the overwhelming support from Australia’s Iranian diaspora community.

“We are overwhelmed by the warmth and generosity of the Iranian diaspora community in Australia. Your support has made us feel welcome and less alone as we navigate this transition.”

Focus on Rebuilding and Privacy

The athletes emphasize their priority on safety, health, and rebuilding their lives as elite competitors. They aspire to continue their careers in the A-League Women’s competition, though securing contracts depends on opportunities ahead.

The duo requests privacy during this adjustment period.

“We respectfully ask the media for privacy and space at this time. We will not be making any further comments or conducting interviews in the immediate future.”
