A 21-year-old trucker has been sentenced to four years and eight months in prison for his role in a devastating eight-vehicle collision on a California freeway that resulted in three fatalities. Jashanpreet Singh, who was convicted of three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, received his sentence on Tuesday. The crash occurred on October 21, 2025, on the 10 Freeway in Ontario, California.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The incident involved a semi-truck driven by Singh, which collided with a queue of slowed traffic. Dashcam footage captured the semi-truck striking the rear of a white SUV, subsequently pushing it into a red sedan. This impact caused the sedan to erupt into a fireball as it was propelled into another truck. The semi-truck then continued across multiple lanes, hitting utility trucks before coming to a stop. In total, eight vehicles, including four semi-trucks, were involved in the pileup. Tragically, two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, and a third victim succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. Four other individuals sustained injuries in the collision.

Driver’s Background and Circumstances

Jashanpreet Singh, an immigrant from India, was identified as the driver of the semi-truck. While initially investigated for driving under the influence, toxicology reports found no alcohol or drugs in his system. Prosecutors presented evidence suggesting that Singh may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Singh had obtained a commercial driver’s license in California in June 2025, just months prior to the fatal crash.

Criticism of the Sentence

The prison sentence handed down to Singh has drawn criticism from some officials. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy commented on the sentence, describing it as a “slap on the wrist” for the loss of three lives. He expressed concerns that individuals without legal immigration status were operating large commercial vehicles, suggesting that stricter enforcement and policies could prevent such tragedies. Duffy also stated a commitment to ensuring accountability for all individuals operating commercial trucks.

Regulatory Scrutiny and Licensing

The incident has also brought renewed attention to the process of issuing commercial driver’s licenses, particularly to non-citizens. Federal officials indicated that Singh may have been ineligible for his license under existing Department of Transportation policies at the time of the crash. Reports suggest that a restriction on Singh’s commercial driver’s license was removed just days before the fatal collision. In September 2025, federal authorities had previously alerted California to compliance issues regarding the issuance of commercial driver’s licenses to non-citizens, recommending a review of existing licenses and a halt to new issuances until compliance was confirmed.

Legal Proceedings and Conviction

Following the crash, Jashanpreet Singh was arrested and subsequently pleaded guilty to three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. The conviction reflects the severity of his actions leading to the deaths of three individuals. The sentencing on Tuesday concluded the legal proceedings against Singh for the 2025 freeway disaster.

Conclusion

The fatal eight-car pileup on the 10 Freeway in Ontario, California, resulted in a significant loss of life and injuries, leading to the conviction and sentencing of trucker Jashanpreet Singh. The case highlights complex issues surrounding traffic safety, licensing regulations for commercial drivers, and the legal status of individuals involved in serious accidents. The sentence of four years and eight months reflects the court’s judgment in this tragic incident.
