John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette guarded their privacy fiercely, shielding their relationship from public scrutiny. Yet, they opened their hearts to one loyal companion: their cherished dog, Friday. Frequently photographed during walks in their Tribeca neighborhood, Friday became a familiar sight alongside the couple, unaware of their fame.
Friday’s Pedigree and Arrival
Friday, a striking black-and-white purebred Canaan dog, joined the family in 1995. Breeder Donna Dodson, an American Kennel Club member from Illinois, handpicked the pup for his handsome features. “He was so good looking,” Dodson recalled. “A perfect match, but still not nearly as good looking as his owner.”
JFK Jr. sought a Canaan dog for the breed’s natural independence, sensitivity, and protective instincts. Dodson noted his devotion: “Friday accepted him for who he really was; dogs have no hidden agenda.” She described him as unassuming and eager for a canine companion.
A Beloved Family Member
Rumors suggest Friday earned his name because he visited JFK Jr.’s office at George magazine only on Fridays. At home, he shared space with Ruby, a playful black cat gifted to Bessette. Close friend Carole Radziwill, JFK Jr.’s cousin by marriage, revealed the couple treated Friday like their child. “She was obsessed with [Friday],” Radziwill said of Bessette.
This bond appears in Ryan Murphy’s FX series Love Story, depicting a heated 1996 argument in Battery Park where JFK Jr. calls Friday “his dog,” and Bessette insists, “OUR dog!” Friday often traveled with them, witnessing their most private moments.
The Fateful Flight and Aftermath
Friday and Ruby missed the tragic 1999 flight to Hyannis Port for Rory Kennedy’s wedding. Relatives had cared for them at the Kennedy compound for weeks due to the couple’s schedules.
After the crash, Efigenio “Effie” Pinheiro, Jackie Kennedy Onassis’s former assistant and later JFK Jr.’s employee, took in Friday. Trusted by the family—he arranged greenery for their 1996 secret wedding on Cumberland Island—Pinheiro relocated to Portugal with the dog, keeping him out of the spotlight.
Ruby found a home with Santina Goodman, a Brown University friend of JFK Jr. Despite care, Friday pined for his owners. Radziwill observed he died in 2002, just three years later. “The dog died of a broken heart,” she said simply.
