Jonah Hill has joined the wave of celebrities seeking a quieter existence away from Los Angeles. The 42-year-old filmmaker shares why he and his wife, Olivia Millar, chose to raise their two children in San Diego during a live episode of the SmartLess podcast.
Seeking Privacy in a Small Town
Hill moved from his hometown three years ago to a very small town with outstanding neighbors. “I wanted to leave LA and raise a family outside of Los Angeles,” he stated. He praised the community, noting, “They never treat me weird or ask me about my job or anything.” Hill highlighted his close friendship with neighbor Dr. Sean, who attended the event and respects his privacy.
During the show at Avalon Hollywood, Hill gave a warm shoutout to his wife in the audience. “Shout out to my beautiful wife, Liv. Where is she? Oh, what’s up, baby?” he said, calling her his best friend.
Reflections on LA Roots
Growing up in Los Angeles during the 1990s holds fond memories for Hill. “LA was such a cool place to grow up in the ’90s because you could go skateboard downtown or you could sneak into a movie premiere or you could go sneak into a comedy club and see Chris Rock or something,” he recalled. He appreciated the blend of show business access and street culture like punk, skating, and graffiti, all without the internet.
Recent Family Milestones
Hill recently shared personal updates in a conversation with Martin Scorsese, confirming his marriage and two children. “And I have two kids now. The only thing that could separate me from my family is the editing room,” he noted. He and Millar, daughter of 1980s supermodel Esmé Marshall, were first seen together in Santa Barbara in September 2022. Their first child arrived in June 2023.
Part of Hollywood’s Shift to Laid-Back Living
Hill’s family relocation mirrors a trend among A-listers prioritizing relaxed lifestyles. Comedian Nikki Glaser returned to St. Louis, Missouri, after COVID, as she shared on Live with Kelly and Mark. Yellowstone actor Luke Grimes moved to Montana with wife Bianca Rodrigues Grimes and son Rigel. Josh Duhamel also embraced rural life in North Dakota with wife Audra Mari and their family.
