Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson, a highly regarded senior equerry to King Charles and Queen Camilla, is set to leave his royal duties at the end of the year after 22 years of military service. The 43-year-old officer, known for his distinguished service and occasional viral moments, plans to transition to the private sector.

A Respected Military Career and Royal Service

Thompson, who serves with the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Scotland, has been a fixture in the British Army since joining in 2005. His military career includes deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming one of Queen Elizabeth II’s most senior bodyguards. In this capacity, he was frequently seen accompanying the late monarch at Balmoral, her Scottish estate.

His association with the Royal Family deepened in December 2019 when he became an equerry to Charles and Camilla, then the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. Following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in September 2022, Thompson remained a steadfast presence by King Charles’s side, notably during the historic Coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

Buckingham Palace confirmed Thompson’s departure, stating that Their Majesties were informed of his plans in advance. A spokesperson conveyed the King and Queen’s gratitude for his support over the past seven years and wished him well for his future endeavors. The role of an equerry is traditionally a demanding one, involving close support to the monarch at major events and acting as their representative.

Viral Moments and Public Recognition

Beyond his professional duties, Lieutenant Colonel Thompson garnered significant public attention, often going viral online due to his composed demeanor and notable appearances. One such moment occurred during the King’s Accession Proclamation, where he calmly removed a pen tray from the King’s desk, a brief but widely shared clip.

His public profile was further elevated during the King’s state visit to the United States in April 2024. While attending a White House event, he was photographed in a kilt, a traditional Scottish attire, which also captured public interest. During the King’s visit to Paris in September 2023, his presence alongside the royal couple at Notre Dame Cathedral also drew considerable attention.

Thompson’s popularity extended to international figures. In May, American lifestyle expert Martha Stewart shared her admiration for him on social media after meeting him during the King’s Trust Global Gala in New York City. She described him as “totally charming, completely cool, exceedingly handsome.”

His prominence led to his promotion to ‘senior equerry’ in October 2023, a role described as the monarch’s right-hand man. This increased visibility reportedly made him uncomfortable, with some reports suggesting he sought the promotion to operate more behind the scenes. His influence was noted by Tatler magazine, which placed him third on its Social Power Index, highlighting his quiet yet impactful presence within royal circles.

A New Chapter with Family

Thompson’s departure comes as he embraces new personal milestones. He married PR executive Olivia Lewis in May 2025, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Theodora, earlier this year. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams suggested that Thompson’s move towards a more private sector role is likely driven by a desire for a more stable and potentially less demanding personal life, balancing his new family responsibilities with his career.

Fitzwilliams commented on the pressures of the equerry role, noting its taxing hours and the constant need to be attentive during significant public engagements. He indicated that the transition was probably inevitable, given Thompson’s need for a more settled environment following his marriage and the birth of his child.

A Legacy of Service and Charm

Throughout his tenure, Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson has been recognized for his dedication, professionalism, and the quiet charm that has endeared him to many. His service has spanned a period of significant transition for the Royal Family, from the later years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign to the establishment of King Charles III’s monarchy.

His military background, combined with his role in supporting the King and Queen, has cemented his reputation as a trusted and capable officer. As he prepares to embark on a new career path, his contributions to the Royal Household are acknowledged, marking the end of a notable chapter in his public service.

The decision to leave royal service for the private sector signifies a personal choice to prioritize a different pace of life, one that accommodates his growing family and future aspirations. His time as an equerry, marked by both duty and unexpected public attention, has left a distinct impression.
