Actress Laura Dern has shared a touching tribute to her longtime friend and Jurassic Park co-star, Sam Neill, following the announcement of his passing at the age of 78. Neill, a celebrated actor born in Northern Ireland and known for his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in the blockbuster dinosaur franchise, died in Sydney, Australia. His death comes after he had publicly shared his successful battle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, having been declared cancer-free in the months prior.

A Cherished Friendship and On-Screen Partnership

Dern, who portrayed paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler and served as Dr. Grant’s romantic interest in the Jurassic Park series, honored Neill with a series of heartfelt posts. Accompanying a nostalgic image of the pair from the original 1993 film, she shared several photographs chronicling their enduring friendship over the years. Her caption spoke volumes about their bond: “Sam was my beloved lifetime friend… He showed me the depths of loyalty, protectiveness, and love, always with the driest of wit. He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man. I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant.”

Sam Neill first captivated audiences as Dr. Alan Grant in the 1993 original, later reprising the role in Jurassic Park III (2001) and the recent Jurassic World Dominion (2022). His performances in the franchise left an indelible mark on fans.

Reactions from the Jurassic Park Family and Beyond

Laura Dern’s tribute resonated deeply with fans and colleagues alike. Richard E. Grant was among those who responded with expressions of love. Many fans reminisced about the impact of the Jurassic Park films, with one commenter noting, “Life found a way for you two to work together and help bring us one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. Thank you Sam, Laura, Jeff, and the rest of the amazing filmmaking family of Jurassic Park.” Others shared personal connections, calling Neill and Dern their “childhood heroes” and expressing gratitude for the joy they brought.

Jeff Goldblum, who played the charismatic chaos theorist Ian Malcolm, also paid homage to Neill. He shared a collection of images from their time on the franchise, writing, “The next great adventure begins. Love, always and forever.”

A “Gut Punch” for Tim Murphy Actor

Joseph Mazzello, who played young Tim Murphy in the original 1993 film, described Neill’s death as a “gut punch.” Mazzello, now 42, shared a video tribute on Instagram, visibly emotional as he spoke about his former co-star. He expressed his shock, having followed Neill’s cancer journey and rejoiced in his recovery. “I thought he was through it – but that is life, isn’t it?” Mazzello reflected.

Mazzello recounted a recent interaction where Neill commented on a post about his movie premiere, a simple “All the best Joey.” This gesture deeply moved Mazzello, revealing that Neill had been quietly supportive even years later. “I didn’t even realise he was following me. I didn’t know that even thought about me any more. But he was rooting for me. He was still rooting for me 33 years later. That was so special to me to know that,” he shared.

Reflecting on the significance of Jurassic Park, Mazzello acknowledged it as a “defining moment” in his life. He fondly recalled Neill’s on-set demeanor, joking that Neill only pretended to dislike working with the child actors, when in reality, he was a supportive and “amazing scene partner.” Mazzello concluded by stating, “I’m so thankful for him. I’m so thankful that he was so great in that movie, because he made us great too.” He also expressed a lingering hope that they might have worked together again, lamenting that it “wasn’t meant to be.” Mazzello ultimately described Neill as “the best of us,” adding, “I can’t say enough good about it and it’s just still shocking, and I’m going to miss him.”

Gratitude from Lex Murphy Actress

Ariana Richards, who portrayed Lex Murphy in the original film, also offered a heartfelt tribute. She wrote of Neill, “Sam – you were more than just a lovely actor to work with – refined, thoughtful, a skill second to none – you were a mentor, protector, and above all, friend. Thank you for making our scenes together feel so real. I will be forever grateful to have been on this journey with you.”

Director and Jurassic World Star’s Tributes

Steven Spielberg, director of the original Jurassic Park, shared his thoughts via Amblin Entertainment’s Instagram. He described Neill as “exceptionally collaborative,” noting that playing a character who initially found children bothersome was a departure from Neill’s real-life role as a loving father. “I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him,” Spielberg stated. “Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our Jurassic family and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world.”

Bryce Dallas Howard, who starred in the later Jurassic World installments, posted a video of Neill, Dern, and Goldblum playing the piano. She recalled their time filming Jurassic World Dominion during the pandemic, expressing gratitude for Neill’s companionship. “Sam was exactly who you hoped he’d be. Funny, warm, wickedly self-deprecating, endlessly kind. A beautiful human being who happened to also be Alan Grant,” she wrote. Howard praised his “immense passion for life,” his generosity, and his magnetic presence, calling him “one of the greats, in every sense.” She added, “He lit up every room he walked into and made the experience of being human feel dazzling.”

A Dignified Farewell

The statement confirming Sam Neill’s death emphasized the peaceful nature of his passing. It noted that he was “surrounded by his family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.” While the loss was described as “sudden and unexpected,” it was also acknowledged as a blessing that he remained cancer-free. His family has requested privacy during this time of mourning. Sam Neill is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren.
