The jury tasked with determining Lindsay Clancy’s culpability in the deaths of her three young children has been sent home for the weekend, having deliberated for two days without reaching a unanimous verdict. The twelve jurors, comprised of nine women and three men, will resume their discussions on Monday regarding the charges against the former labor and delivery nurse.

Deliberations Continue on Monday

After two full days of deliberations, the jury in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, accused of murdering her three children, could not reach a unanimous decision. They were dismissed on Friday and instructed not to discuss the case until they reconvene on Monday. Clancy, 36, faces charges including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and manslaughter in connection with the deaths of her children, Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, at their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home on January 24, 2023. Clancy has not disputed the act of strangling her children with exercise bands but has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

Defense Awaits Verdict

Outside the courthouse on Friday, Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, described his client as feeling “nervous,” “sad,” and “scared,” emotions that have reportedly persisted since the incident. Reddington conveyed that Clancy’s state of mind has remained consistent throughout the proceedings.

Events Leading to the Discovery

On the evening of the tragedy, Clancy reportedly sent her then-husband, Patrick Clancy, out of the house to run errands. He testified that he left their Duxbury home at approximately 5:12 p.m. after Clancy asked him to purchase liquid stool softener for one of the children. Surveillance footage presented during the trial showed Patrick Clancy at a local CVS Pharmacy in Kingston, about a 12-minute drive away, and later at a restaurant called ThreeV. He returned home around 6:09 p.m. to find his wife lying in the snow in their backyard beneath a second-story bedroom window.

Patrick Clancy testified that upon returning home, he found the bedroom door locked. Using a spare key, he entered the house and discovered his wife outside. When he asked what had happened, she reportedly stated that she had attempted to end her own life. He remained with her for approximately ten minutes before calling 911. First responders arrived shortly after, and Patrick Clancy subsequently discovered his three children strangled in the basement.

Autopsy Findings

The Massachusetts State Medical Examiner, Dr. Kimberly Springer, testified that the autopsy for Callan revealed abrasions on the infant’s neck, along with hemorrhages on his face and beneath his skin. Similar findings were noted for his siblings, indicating they were all strangled with an exercise band.

Prosecution and Defense Arguments

During the closing arguments, Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague urged the jury to find Clancy guilty, asserting that she was aware her actions were wrong and capable of conforming her behavior to the law but chose not to. Sprague argued that Clancy’s actions indicated premeditation and a deliberate intent, suggesting she did not perceive her children as individuals with rights and futures in that moment. The prosecutor characterized the scene as one where the children were left “discarded on the basement floor, like broken toys.”

Conversely, the defense has centered its case on Clancy’s mental state, arguing she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was overmedicated on powerful drugs prescribed for her depression. Medical professionals who testified stated that the injuries Clancy sustained, including cuts to her wrists and neck before her fall from the window, were superficial. The fall itself resulted in paralysis from the waist down, leaving her wheelchair-bound.

Civil Lawsuits and Medical Providers

Both Lindsay Clancy and her former husband, Patrick Clancy, have initiated separate civil lawsuits against several of her medical providers. These suits allege that Clancy was overmedicated while undergoing treatment for postpartum mental health issues, and that this alleged overmedication exacerbated her condition, leading to the children’s deaths. Several of the medical providers named in these lawsuits, including Dr. Jennifer Tufts and Nurse Rebecca Jollotta, testified during the murder trial. The defendants in the civil suits have denied the allegations.

Potential Outcomes

If convicted of murder, Lindsay Clancy faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Should the jury find her not criminally responsible due to a lack of mental capacity, she would be committed to a state mental health facility for treatment.
