Intense Fire Breaks Out at Southeast London Nursery
A significant fire erupted at a nursery in southeast London, prompting a rapid response from emergency services. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the flames that severely damaged the building’s structure.
The incident occurred at Rushey Green Nursery in Catford, Lewisham, where crews arrived shortly after the initial alert at approximately 6:40 p.m. on Saturday evening. Videos shared online captured the roof fully ablaze, with thick plumes of smoke rising into the sky as onlookers expressed concern from a safe distance.
Emergency Response and Damage Assessment
Eight fire engines carrying about 60 firefighters were dispatched from nearby stations, including Bromley, East Greenwich, and Peckham. Officials reported that nearly half of the three-story building’s roof was destroyed by the intense flames. The fire was brought under control by 9:25 p.m., though crews remained on site for several hours to ensure safety.
No injuries were reported from the blaze. To protect nearby residents from the heavy smoke, authorities advised keeping windows and doors closed. Road closures were implemented around Rushey Green, leading to traffic disruptions, and drivers were urged to avoid the area.

Local residents shared their observations on social media, describing the scene as alarming. One individual noted smelling the smoke while driving nearby, calling it a “very bad fire.” Another expressed sorrow, stating it was a “well-loved and established nursery.” A third observer mentioned the roof being “well alight” with numerous emergency vehicles present and emphasized keeping windows closed.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson confirmed the details, saying: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a fire on Rushey Green in Lewisham. Firefighters tackled a fire at a three-story nursery where nearly half of the roof was destroyed by fire. There were no injuries reported.” The spokesperson added that the Brigade’s Control Office received 17 calls starting at 6:37 p.m. and that the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
James J. Walsh, Councillor for Rushey Green, shared a video of the fire online and warned the public: “There is an active fire incident on Rushey Green at The Rushey Green Nursery. Please amend your journeys and expect delays.”
The nursery serves children aged from three months to five years, providing essential early care in the community. Investigators are actively probing the origin of the fire to determine what led to the destructive event.
