New Zealand Warriors halfback Luke Metcalf drew laughs from fans after a video captured him mumbling nonsensical rugby tactics moments after waking from knee surgery.
The Viral Wake-Up Moment
Metcalf’s wife, Brodie, recorded the 26-year-old looking groggy as he attempted to share game strategies. He rambled: “Right strip, left post, snap, nine twists nice and tight, come back.”
Continuing his dazed advice, Metcalf added: “Like, Jacko Ford said, seven-block wide compass.” When Brodie asked if that was all, he pressed on, directing teammates: “Wayde, make sure you’re still sinking defenders in.”
He went further, instructing: “Chanel, make sure you take a line force… left-foot step. Capes, kick-chase. He’s playing centre.”
Fan Reactions and Wife’s Support
Rugby league enthusiasts online quickly mocked the clip, with one commenting: “Bro giving away the game plans.” Another quipped: “Hahaha clubs be taking notes.”
Brodie captioned the post: “8 months of hard work. Always proud of you egg head,” highlighting Metcalf’s grueling recovery from an ACL tear suffered in Round 17 against the Broncos. The injury sidelined him for the 2025 season and derailed the Warriors’ campaign, as he led the Dally M standings at the time.
Injury History and Comeback
Metcalf recently discussed his rehabilitation, noting he studied halfback play under Warriors legend Stacey Jones during downtime. “It was obviously tough to take when it happened, but I probably try to find a positive out of everything,” he said.
“I felt like I did a bit of work, in terms of studying the game and looking probably more in depth at who we’d play in that week. I went back through and watched some of our games last year and had a look at where we can improve.”
Prior to the ACL rupture, Metcalf broke his leg in Round 4 of the 2024 season, limiting him to seven games. The couple, married last year with a young child, have navigated life abroad. Metcalf praised Brodie: “It’s crazy to think we’re married now, with a baby and living in another country. I love how we’ve grown together, and I appreciate everything Brodie does and has sacrificed so I can chase my dreams.”
