Owners of several popular luxury vehicles from manufacturers like BMW, Kia, and Mercedes face restrictions in public parking areas across the UK. Local councils enforce a length rule that prohibits vehicles exceeding five meters from using standard parking bays, which typically measure up to 4.8 meters. Violators risk fines for non-compliance.
The Growing Challenge of Vehicle Size
Cars continue to increase in size, creating issues for outdated parking infrastructure. National research highlights this trend: in 1965, the top five best-selling UK models averaged 1.5 meters in width and 3.9 meters in length. By 2020, those figures rose to 1.8 meters in width and 4.3 meters in length. New Forest Council officials state: “The standard parking space has remained at a consistent size for several decades. However, national research has shown that on average, cars have got larger over time, both in width and in length.”
Affected Vehicle Models
Several high-end models now exceed the permitted length, effectively barring them from council-operated car parks. These include the Mercedes S-Class, Tesla Model S, BMW 7 Series, Range Rover, Audi A8, Kia EV9, and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. High-performance sports cars may also face exclusion if they surpass the limit.
Council Policies and Enforcement
Recent inquiries to UK local authorities reveal that five councils—Wokingham, South Hampshire, Broadland, South Suffolk, and West Devon—have implemented bans on oversized vehicles. These measures address the mismatch between modern car dimensions and legacy parking designs, many unchanged for decades.
Wokingham Council details its policy clearly: “We have a limit on size of vehicle and weight of vehicle allowed to use the car parks. These were introduced at different dates. Since June 2023 all motor vehicles whose maximum length does not exceed 5.00 metres and overall height does not exceed 2.10 metres and whose gross weight does not exceed 3050 kilogrammes are allowed.” This rule ensures compliance while maintaining space efficiency in public facilities.
