Rapper Macklemore has announced a significant donation of $1 million to Palestinian relief organizations, pledging the entirety of his net earnings from Ed Sheeran’s “+ – = ÷ x” Tour. The artist, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, made this commitment following his removal as an opening act on the tour after delivering a pro-Palestinian statement during his performances. Macklemore also directly challenged New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft to match his substantial donation.

Macklemore’s Generous Pledge and Challenge

In a detailed statement shared on Instagram, Macklemore expressed his desire to redirect the conversation back to the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by Palestinians. “I will be donating the entire $1 million of my net earnings from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour to six organizations working directly to support the Palestinian people,” he declared. He extended an invitation to Robert Kraft, stating, “And I invite Robert Kraft to match my donation.” Macklemore emphasized his belief that “Palestinian lives are worth protecting” and are no less valuable than any other life globally.

The rapper stressed that his actions were not about personal setbacks or headlines but were centered on advocating for the freedom, dignity, and safety of Palestinians in their homeland. He drew attention to the severe dangers faced by civilians, including parents struggling to get medical care for their children and the aid workers and journalists risking their lives. Macklemore specifically mentioned the recent deaths of 15-year-old Muhammad al Zinati and aid worker Sherif Lubbad during an Israeli strike, highlighting the tragic loss of life.

Acknowledging that financial contributions are one of the less demanding forms of solidarity, Macklemore stated his willingness to donate because he is able and because these organizations are actively providing support. He reiterated his core message: “Whatever we disagree about, perhaps we can agree on this: Palestinian lives are worth protecting.”

Robert Kraft Responds with Matching Donation

Shortly after Macklemore’s announcement, Robert Kraft revealed his intention to match a $2 million donation from Ed Sheeran. Kraft stated that Sheeran had contacted him to encourage this matching contribution, even before Macklemore issued his public challenge. Kraft’s commitment adds a significant sum to the relief efforts for Palestinians.

Wider Tour Impact and Artist Withdrawals

Macklemore’s removal from the tour and his subsequent donation announcement occurred amidst significant fallout for Ed Sheeran. Several of Sheeran’s other opening acts, including Finneas (brother of Billie Eilish), Myles Smith, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, and Beoga, announced their withdrawal from the tour in solidarity with Macklemore and Palestine. These artists cited their inability to continue with the tour under circumstances where they felt advocacy for Palestine was being silenced.

Finneas stated, “Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed. I have decided to withdraw from my upcoming tour dates with Ed Sheeran. I stand with Palestine and its people.” Similarly, Irish singer Aaron Rowe expressed his inability to “stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up.” The band Lukas Graham shared that their upbringing emphasized the importance of speaking one’s mind, and they could not continue the tour under the current conditions. Irish band Beoga, long-time friends of Sheeran, also withdrew, stating that playing in venues that silence advocacy for a Free Palestine was “simply not an option.” Myles Smith, while confirming his departure, clarified that while Palestinians are the victims, Sheeran is not the perpetrator, emphasizing his support for his friend while still advocating for Palestinian life and freedom.

Reasons for Macklemore’s Removal

Macklemore was reportedly removed from the tour after delivering politically charged speeches in support of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank during his September 4 and 5 performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. He wore a keffiyeh during his set and performed his song “Hind’s Hall,” which criticizes actions in Gaza, with accompanying visuals of the region. He explicitly called for a “Free Palestine” and thanked student activists who organized protests.

Ed Sheeran addressed the situation, explaining that while he respects Macklemore as an artist, venue owners communicated that they would cancel shows if Macklemore remained on the lineup due to his statements. Sheeran stated that the decision was made by the promoters and venues, not by him, and that he aimed to avoid canceling the tour, which would affect fans and his crew. He maintained that he personally holds views on the conflict but chooses not to use his platform for political statements, especially given his young audience, preferring to create a space for unity and joy.

Robert Kraft, whose company owns Gillette Stadium, defended the decision to prevent Macklemore from performing at his venue. Kraft cited a commitment to a welcoming environment and stated that Macklemore’s actions, including perceived antisemitic rhetoric and imagery, crossed a line and would be deeply offensive to the Jewish community. Macklemore, however, countered that Sheeran informed him that Kraft had personally called Sheeran to convey the ultimatum from stadium owners.

The controversy has highlighted the complex intersection of activism, artistic expression, and the music industry, with significant financial and professional implications for the artists involved.

Conclusion

Macklemore’s substantial donation and public challenge to Robert Kraft underscore a strong commitment to Palestinian humanitarian efforts. The subsequent withdrawals of other artists from Ed Sheeran’s tour signal a broader solidarity within the music community regarding the Palestinian cause. While Ed Sheeran and Robert Kraft have defended their positions, emphasizing venue decisions and community concerns, the situation has amplified the discourse surrounding political expression in large-scale entertainment events.
