John Aiken delivers a poignant tribute to Married At First Sight relationship expert Mel Schilling following her death at age 54. The segment airs just before Wednesday’s episode, where Aiken struggles to hold back tears while honoring his co-star and close friend.
Emotional On-Air Remembrance
Aiken opens the tribute with deep sorrow: “It’s with great sadness and a heavy heart that today the MAFS family lost a colleague and a dear friend, Mel Schilling.”
He describes her vibrant presence: “She could light up a room, full of joy with a huge smile. Whenever she was on set, everyone lifted. She brought fun, humor, and authenticity that everyone loved.”
Aiken praises her leadership: “She was an inspiration, never complained, just rolled up her sleeves and got on with things.” He adds, “Someone who meant so much to all of us, and it’s not fair. Married At First Sight won’t be the same without her.”
The tribute extends thoughts to her family: “I send all thoughts and prayers to Gareth, her husband, and Maddie, her wonderful daughter. Let’s take a moment now to remember Mel. We love you.”
Channel Nine follows with a dedication: “With gratitude for her warmth, honesty, and insight. A beloved member of our team, she’ll always be part of the Married At First Sight family.”
Today Show Interview
Earlier on Wednesday, Aiken, 55, appears shaken on the Today show, discussing the sudden loss. “This has been a very difficult day for me and everyone in the MAFS family and her nearest and dearest. It’s tragic, and it happened very quickly,” he shares.
He recounts a final visit: “I had the chance to see Mel and her husband Gareth one last time. It was very emotional and very special.” Aiken notes the aggressive cancer: “She was such a fighter, never complained, a breath of fresh air and a shining light.”
Reflecting on her impact, Aiken calls her a “real role model” and “voice of reason.” He feels “very privileged” to work with her for a decade: “She was my partner in crime. I couldn’t have done it without her. It won’t be the same.”
Aiken highlights her passion: “She loved love, completely committed to the participants. She wanted everyone to get the fairy tale.”
Mel Schilling’s Legacy
Mel Schilling’s husband Gareth announces her passing on Tuesday, days after she reveals the cancer spread to her brain. In his statement, he speaks of her love for him and their 10-year-old daughter Madison.
Schilling leads the expert panel for 12 seasons of the Australian Married At First Sight and appears in five series of the UK version on Channel 4. She steps back from filming earlier this year to focus on family and health, with Aiken filling in for the ongoing UK series.
