Newly appointed general manager John Chayka has long admired McKenna’s abilities. “I’ve kept track of him for a number of years now, and the skill level, the creativity, obviously the puck ability and then his shot and release is all pretty special,” Chayka stated. “A good package, and it’ll be good to get with the scouts and talk through it all, but I know there’s a lot of passion for a lot of players, including Gavin.”
Toronto entered the lottery with the fifth-best odds at 8.5 percent. The win avoids an immediate complication from a prior trade but commits the team to surrendering first-round picks in 2027 and 2028 to Philadelphia and Boston. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly describes the pick allocation between the Bruins and Flyers as a complex matter still under resolution.
McKenna’s Legal Hurdle Cleared, Misdemeanor Charges Remain
McKenna’s standout freshman season at Penn State faced a setback from a January 31 incident off-campus. Authorities charged the 18-year-old from Canada’s Yukon Territory with felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, disorderly conduct, and harassment following an altercation at Doggie’s Pub in State College. Video evidence captured McKenna punching another man, who sustained a broken jaw.
Centre County District Attorney and State College Police later determined the footage lacked clear proof of intent to cause serious harm, leading to the dismissal of the felony charge that carried up to 20 years in prison. McKenna still faces the misdemeanor counts.
The clash occurred after Penn State’s outdoor game against Michigan State. Reports suggest a person unaffiliated with the team verbally harassed a family member of McKenna’s while the hockey squad occupied a private room at the bar, prompting the altercation.
Draft Lottery Order and Top Prospects
Vancouver, with the highest pre-lottery odds, lands the third pick on June 26. San Jose takes second, followed by Chicago, New York Rangers, Calgary, Seattle, Winnipeg, reigning champion Florida, and Nashville in the top 10.
Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg draws interest for the top spot, but McKenna’s dominant NCAA performance stands out. He tallied 15 goals and 36 assists, helping Penn State advance to the NCAA Tournament.
