Marnus Labuschagne, once ranked the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) number one Test batter in 2023, has experienced a dip in his run-scoring consistency in the period since. His last Test century was recorded during the 2023 Ashes series. In the most recent Australian summer’s Ashes campaign, he averaged 25 runs per innings. Further form concerns were highlighted in the recent Tests against Bangladesh, where he posted scores of 1, 31, and 4.
The 32-year-old’s position in the team will likely face competition from wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis and the emerging 23-year-old Cooper Connolly. Connolly, who has been identified by many as a player with significant future potential, has already represented Australia in one Test match, which took place in Sri Lanka last year.
