Former NRL player and actor Matt Nable shares heartbreaking news about his cousin’s motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis, just two years after his brother Aaron succumbed to the same incurable condition.
Aaron Nable’s Four-Year Battle Ends
Aaron Nable, an amateur Australian boxing champion at age 19, fought MND for four years before passing away on March 3, 2024, at 46. His death occurred as the NRL geared up for its season opener in Las Vegas. Aaron left behind three young sons, aged 12, 4, and 3. Over 2,000 people attended his funeral, reflecting his widespread impact as a gregarious yet gentle man with a big heart.
Cousin Luke Faces the Same Cruel Disease
Nable recently posted on Instagram about his 35-year-old cousin Luke, diagnosed with MND last year. “This is my cousin Luke Nable. He’s 35. He was diagnosed with MND last year. He’s doing it tough,” Nable wrote. “He’s moved into a wheelchair and he gets a PEG in his stomach later this month.”
Nable described the disease as “horrible” and “indiscriminate and cruel.” He shared Luke’s poignant words to his mother: “I thought I had more time.” Nable urged, “Fight as hard as you can cuz.” He also directed followers to a GoFundMe page supporting Luke.
MND’s Devastating Impact
Motor neurone disease attacks nerve cells in the brain, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventual death. Nable first spoke publicly after Aaron’s diagnosis in July 2020. “This disease, what it does is just the hardest thing to watch,” he said.
Reflecting on the loss, Nable noted, “You realise when you lose something like this, it’s hard to accept. I won’t ever be the same. I won’t be whole again.” He emphasized Aaron’s focus on providing for his children amid the illness.
Raising Awareness and Funds
Nable participated in the AFL’s Big Freeze fundraiser last year to support MND research, inspired by footy legend Neale Daniher. His ongoing advocacy highlights the urgent need for a cure.
