Investigation Outcome
Football Australia has cleared Melbourne City forward Medin Memeti following an investigation into allegations of racial abuse during a recent A-League match. The 18-year-old player, of Albanian heritage, faced scrutiny after Brisbane Roar striker Justin Vidic claimed Memeti directed an ethnic slur at him.
The incident reportedly occurred on January 6 at AAMI Park, where Vidic, who is of Serbian descent, alleged Memeti called him a ‘gypsy.’ This term is widely regarded as a derogatory slur against individuals of Balkan heritage.
Insufficient Evidence Cited
In a statement released on Friday, Football Australia explained that no further action would be taken against Memeti. Officials noted the withdrawal of certain initial claims by Vidic, combined with a lack of supporting witness accounts or additional evidence, made it impossible to confirm a violation of the national code of conduct and ethics.
Brisbane Roar has accepted the decision, though a club spokesperson contested Football Australia’s assertion that any initial claims were withdrawn. The resolution brings closure to the matter, allowing both players to focus on upcoming fixtures.
Sydney Derby Preview
Meanwhile, attention shifts to the highly anticipated Sydney derby between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night. Coaches Ufuk Talay and Gary Van Egmond, longtime friends from their playing days at Marconi Stallions in the National Soccer League—where they won a title in 1993—will set aside their personal bond for the match.
Talay emphasized the competitive nature of the rivalry, stating, ‘We all have white line fever; we want to win games. We’ve known each other for a long time, but once the whistle goes, our friendship ends.’
Sydney FC enters the game on a two-match losing streak, including a surprising 4-0 defeat to Melbourne Victory on Australia Day. The team could see the return of key player Joe Lolley from injury, boosting their chances. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:35pm AEDT, with tickets still available online.
