A meteorite tore through the roof of a Texas home following a resounding boom and flash over Houston. Homeowner Sherrie James discovered the heavy space rock embedded in her daughter’s bedroom ceiling after the incident on Saturday.
Reports of Boom and Green Flash
Witnesses across the Houston area reported a loud explosion and a vivid green flash in the sky. The Brenham Fire Department documented accounts of the event, describing it as a possible meteor sighting.
Homeowner’s Discovery
James examined the unusual rock and immediately suspected its extraterrestrial origin. “I saw the rock and the first thing that came to my mind was that it was a meteor,” she stated. “It’s very heavy, and it doesn’t look like a normal rock or anything… Just the weight of it, you can tell something is different.”
The impact created a hole in the ceiling and dents in the floor, indicating significant force upon entry.
Official Confirmations
Local fire officials verified that a meteor exploded nearby, scattering fragments across the region. NASA confirmed a 3-foot meteor fragment struck northwestern Houston.
Analysis from NASA reveals the meteor appeared at 49 miles above Stagecoach, northwest of Houston, traveling southeast at 35,000 mph. It fragmented at 29 miles above Bammel, west of Cypress Station. The roughly one-ton, 3-foot-diameter object generated a pressure wave responsible for the booms heard locally. Doppler weather radar detected meteorites between Willowbrook and Northgate Crossing.
Video Evidence
Dashboard footage from a driver in Southeast Texas captures a bright streak descending through the night sky, corroborating eyewitness reports.
