Minister Acknowledges On-Field Incident and Suspension
A junior minister within the current government has expressed regret over an on-field altercation that resulted in a five-week suspension from his long-standing amateur soccer club. Josh Wilson, who serves as the Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy and plays in the over-45s division for Fremantle City FC, was reportedly involved in an aggressive exchange with an opposing player during a match against UWA-Nedlands FC in late April. The West Australian MP addressed the incident publicly on Wednesday.
Details of the Red Card and Suspension
Wilson confirmed that this was the first red card he has ever received in his playing career. He stated that he fully accepts the mandatory suspension that accompanies such a disciplinary action. “I regret the incident,” Wilson told reporters. “I don’t play sport for the argy-bargy. I play sport for the teamwork, camaraderie, fitness and all the rest of it.”
He also defended the length of the suspension, describing it as standard protocol for such offenses. “Everybody who plays football knows that when you get a red card, you get a week,” he explained. “If it’s a red card that involves a bit of contretemps or a bit of ‘afters’, as some people say, it’s another four weeks on top of that.”
Apologies and Impact on Team
Wilson conveyed his disappointment with the situation. He extended an apology to the players from UWA-Nedlands FC who joined Fremantle City club members for post-game drinks. “I’m also sorry that I left my team in the lurch,” Wilson added. “It was a pretty early incident. My guys, on a very stormy Sunday, had to play close to 75 minutes one person down, 10 against 11, and we lost 3–2.” The incident occurred early in the match, forcing his team to play shorthanded for the majority of the game in challenging weather conditions.
