Arrest in Shocking Overcharge Incident

Mumbai authorities have detained a taxi operator accused of defrauding an American visitor by demanding Rs 18,000 for a mere 400-meter journey near the city’s international airport. The episode surfaced through the victim’s online account, leading to a rapid response from local law enforcement.

Details of the Incident

The suspect, a 50-year-old permit holder named Deshraj Yadav from Sahar Village, was taken into custody on Friday. The event unfolded on January 12, when the woman, Argentina Ariano, arrived from the United States for professional commitments. She engaged a cab at the airport intending to head to a nearby luxury hotel.

Rather than proceeding straight to the destination, Yadav reportedly circled the Andheri East neighborhood for about 20 minutes to simulate a longer trip. He eventually delivered her to the hotel, which was under half a kilometer from the pickup point, and insisted on the inflated payment of Rs 18,000.

Viral Social Media Post Sparks Probe

The story gained traction on January 26 after Ariano posted a video on X detailing her encounter. Her message quickly amassed over 100,000 views, igniting public indignation. In the post, she described: “Landed in Mumbai recently and took a taxi to @HiltonHotels. The driver and another guy took us to an unknown location first, charged us $200 (?18,000), and then dropped us at the hotel which was only 400m away. Taxi No: MH 01 BD 5405 #taxidriver #mumbai #RepublicDay2026 #india.” She included the vehicle’s registration details.

Following the widespread attention, officers from the Sahar station launched an inquiry. Unable to reach Ariano right away, they filed a First Information Report independently on January 27, refining it the next day under Sections 318(4) for cheating and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Investigation and Arrest

Authorities used the provided taxi number to locate Yadav in Sahar Village. They impounded the white Toyota Etios involved and apprehended him just three hours after logging the report. He appeared in court and was held in judicial custody.

Investigators note that two people participated in the scheme. While Yadav is in detention, his partner, Taufiq Shaikh, remains at large, with efforts ongoing to capture him. Officials emphasize how platforms like social media can expose such misconduct and affirm their commitment to penalizing those who target visitors.

The probe continues to explore any prior similar offenses by the suspects.

Pattern of Overcharging Cases

This case echoes recent overcharge reports in the area. On December 24, 2024, a 49-year-old Australian NRI businessman, D Vijay, was billed Rs 2,800 for a 10-minute airport-to-Vile Parle hotel transfer. After his complaint from Nagpur, police arrested the driver, Vinod Goswami, aged 32.

Earlier, on December 14, 2024, an auto-rickshaw operator, Ritesh Kadam, 26, was nabbed for extracting Rs 3,500 from a 19-year-old chemical engineering student from Sangli, Vishwajeet Patil, who was returning from the US for a college break. The actual metered fare to Chembur and Dadar railway station was only Rs 106.
