A woman has detailed how her life has been significantly disrupted by a neighbor’s persistent and disruptive habits on his balcony, leading to sleep deprivation and stress. The resident, who moved into an apartment building two months ago, shared her experience on Reddit, describing how the man in the unit below her has transformed his balcony into an extension of his living space, with detrimental effects on her quality of life.
Escalating Neighborly Disturbances
Initially, the woman tolerated the usual noises associated with a new neighbor moving in. However, the situation escalated when the neighbor, described as a man in his 50s, furnished his balcony and began spending a substantial amount of time there. According to her account, he would spend hours on the balcony, often clad only in his underwear, chain-smoking, playing videos with the speaker on, and engaging in lengthy video calls. These calls, she noted, sometimes extended past midnight.
The woman believes her neighbor’s disregard for noise levels stems from his assumption that others cannot understand him, as he speaks a Slavic language. “I think he speaks a Slavic language, so he probably assumes no one around understands him and feels no need to lower his voice,” she wrote. “But his endless noisy balcony lifestyle is completely disrupting my daily life and causing me stress.” The proximity of her living room and bedroom directly above his balcony means the noise penetrates her apartment even with windows closed, creating an illusion that the sounds are originating from within her own space.
Worsening Conditions and Sleep Deprivation
While she initially tried to mitigate the disturbances by using headphones or increasing her television volume, the situation recently took a turn for the worse. For several days, the neighbor began a new habit of smoking on the balcony around 4 a.m., accompanied by frequent and loud throat-clearing and spitting. This nocturnal activity, along with similar behavior during the day, became unbearable, waking her up repeatedly. “He really spits every 5 seconds,” she stated, emphasizing the disturbing nature of the noise that prevents her from getting adequate rest. The woman reported being exhausted and struggling to function at work due to only getting about three hours of sleep per night.
Hesitation to Confront and Managerial Apathy
Despite the significant impact on her well-being, the woman expressed reluctance to directly confront her neighbor. She described him as someone who “doesn’t seem like a very considerate person,” making a direct approach feel daunting. Furthermore, she harbored doubts about the effectiveness of involving the apartment manager, anticipating that they “probably won’t care.” This lack of confidence in resolution pathways left her contemplating less direct methods, such as leaving a note on his door.
“If that doesn’t work I have nothing to do I guess. I am feeling exhausted and have to go to work with only 3 hours sleep due to him. How adults can be that much unconsidered and self centred?!” she lamented, highlighting her feelings of helplessness and frustration.
Online Community Offers Solutions
The Reddit post resonated with many users, garnering over 1,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments. The shared experience sparked a discussion, with numerous individuals offering advice and commiserating with the original poster.
Creative Counter-Noise Strategies
One popular suggestion involved retaliating with noise. A user proposed playing loud music on her own balcony whenever the neighbor started his video calls. Another individual shared a similar tactic that proved effective: placing a powerful speaker near an open window and playing loud music, specifically mentioning Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.” This user reported that their neighbor, who used to spend evenings on their balcony talking on the phone, ceased the behavior after the tactic was employed twice.
A more assertive approach suggested by another respondent was to record the neighbor’s disruptive noises, including the late-night calls and spitting. The recordings could then be played back to the neighbor on a loop, loudly, and presented to the landlord as evidence. This user also advised asking the landlord about the permissibility of smoking on the premises.
Alternative Approaches
Beyond direct noise countermeasures, some users suggested more unconventional methods. One idea was to hang bird feeders outside the windows. This suggestion was supported by another commenter who noted that squirrels are also attracted to bird food and could potentially create their own disturbances below. The implication was that the added activity and potential mess might deter the neighbor or at least shift the focus of disruption.
The collective response highlights the commonality of neighborly disputes and the creative lengths people will go to find peace in their own homes when direct communication or official channels seem ineffective.
