Marius Borg Høiby, the 29-year-old son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, prepares to appear in court this week on serious charges, including multiple counts of rape and abuse against a former partner.
Høiby faces a total of 38 charges, encompassing the rape of four women, assault and threats against a girlfriend, damage to her apartment, drug-related offenses, and various driving violations. Conviction on these counts could result in up to 10 years imprisonment. Authorities also accuse him of secretly filming several women.
Although connected to the Norwegian monarchy, Høiby holds no royal title and performs no official duties. He remains outside the line of succession and is not considered a public figure by the royal family. However, his familial ties have drawn international attention to the upcoming trial.

Born on January 13, 1997, to Crown Princess Mette-Marit and her former partner Morten Borg, Høiby entered the public eye after his mother’s marriage to Crown Prince Haakon in 2001. This union elevated his profile, despite his lack of formal royal status.
He shares two half-siblings with his mother and stepfather. Media scrutiny has followed Høiby over the years, including reports of his associations with gang members in 2023 and a prior arrest in 2017 for cocaine use at a music festival.
Family and Legal Statements
Crown Prince Haakon addressed the situation in a recent statement, emphasizing Høiby’s independence from the royal household. ‘Marius Borg Høiby is not part of the royal household. In that respect, he is independent. But of course we love him. He is an important part of our family,’ Haakon said. ‘And he is a citizen of Norway. With that, he has the same responsibilities as everyone else, but also the same rights.’
Høiby’s legal team acknowledges the gravity of the accusations but denies wrongdoing in the majority of cases. His attorney, Petar Sekulic, indicated plans to plead guilty to certain lesser charges at the trial’s outset. ‘He does not agree with the claims regarding rape and domestic violence,’ Sekulic stated.
In August of last year, Høiby admitted to causing bodily harm to a former partner while under the influence of cocaine and alcohol. He expressed regret in a public statement at the time.
