Ofgem’s Top Tips to Slash Energy Bills as Cap Drops £117

Britain’s energy regulator Ofgem delivers practical advice to help households lower gas and electricity expenses. Forecasts predict the energy price cap will decrease by about £117 in April, thanks to government initiatives removing green levies from bills, providing relief after prolonged high costs.

Ofgem emphasizes straightforward adjustments and upgrades that yield significant savings. Millions of households continue facing elevated energy prices, but regulators note that routine actions and enhancements make a real difference.

Quick Wins for Immediate Savings

Households achieve instant reductions through minor habit changes. A key step involves lowering boiler temperatures. For combi boilers, reducing flow temperatures for radiators and hot water cuts running costs. Similarly, dialing back the thermostat and adjusting radiators in unused rooms lowers heating expenses.

Energy Saving Trust guidance confirms that proper use of heating controls delivers noticeable bill reductions. In laundry routines, washing at 30°C, loading machines fully, and opting for shorter cycles minimize electricity consumption without compromising results, aided by advanced detergents.

As evenings cool, drawing curtains traps warmth inside, preventing heat loss via windows. Ofgem also recommends three lighting strategies: switching to LED bulbs, turning off lights when leaving rooms, and using timers or sensors for efficiency.

Simple Upgrades for Long-Term Gains

Beyond daily tweaks, affordable modifications secure ongoing savings. Draught-proofing doors and windows retains heat while maintaining ventilation. For single-glazed windows, applying film or adding secondary glazing curbs heat escape.

Wrapping hot water tanks with cylinder jackets prevents heat loss at low cost. Smart thermostats and controls activate heating and hot water only as required. Energy suppliers install smart meters at no charge, enabling precise usage tracking.

Invest in Bigger Improvements

For greater impact, Ofgem advocates home insulation as one of the most effective measures to maintain warmth and reduce consumption. Larger upgrades like cavity wall or loft insulation offer substantial returns.

Check EPC and Access Support

Households should examine their Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) to assess efficiency and identify cost-saving upgrades. Government Help to Heat programs provide grants for insulation and similar enhancements. Assistance exists for those facing payment difficulties.
