Peter Mandelson faces arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office following claims he leaked Downing Street emails to financier Jeffrey Epstein during his tenure as business secretary in Gordon Brown’s cabinet. The Metropolitan Police detained the Labour peer on Monday afternoon. He had recently stepped down as British ambassador to the US and resigned from the House of Lords.
Earlier in February, Mandelson quit the Labour Party to avoid further embarrassment amid new details about his connections to Epstein. Newly released documents from the Epstein files reveal that the financier covered costs for an osteopathy course for Mandelson’s husband, Reinaldo Avila da Silva, in 2009, amid the global financial crisis.
Scrutiny Over US Ambassador Role
Prime Minister Keir Starmer encountered criticism for nominating Mandelson as US ambassador, including pushback from party members like former deputy Angela Rayner. She advocated for Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee to review and release relevant documents. Starmer dismissed Mandelson from the post in September 2025 amid mounting pressure over Epstein links.
Political Rise and Labour Legacy
Born into Labour royalty as the grandson of former home and foreign secretary Herbert Morrison, Mandelson visited Downing Street at age 12, invited by Prime Minister Harold Wilson. He described the experience as dazzling.
Mandelson’s career began with election to Lambeth Borough Council in 1979, alongside future figures like Morgan McSweeney. Disillusioned by the council’s left-wing leadership under “Red Ted,” he left after three years. He later joined television before becoming Labour’s director of communications under Neil Kinnock. His efforts helped the party gain seats in the 1987 election despite defeat.
In 1990, Mandelson secured the Hartlepool seat, winning in 1992. He supported Tony Blair in the leadership contest against Gordon Brown after John Smith’s death. Rewarded with the 1997 campaign directorship, he entered government as trade and industry secretary.
Mandelson served as EU trade commissioner from 2004. In 2008, Brown elevated him to the peerage and business secretary role, cementing his status.
Details of Epstein Connections
Mandelson became the first political appointee to the US ambassador position in nearly 50 years, drawing questions over his lobbying work, Epstein ties, and views on China, Europe, and globalism.
A JPMorgan Chase report highlighted a “particularly close relationship,” noting Epstein called him “Petie.” It indicated Mandelson visited Epstein’s New York home in June 2009, while Epstein served an 18-month sentence for soliciting prostitution from a minor.
Photos of the pair have circulated widely, especially after the ambassador nomination. Mandelson contributed a poem to Epstein’s birthday book, released by a Congressional committee: “Once upon a time, an intelligent, sharp-witted man they call ‘mysterious’ parachuted into my life… But wherever he is in the world, he remains my best pal. Happy birthday, Jeffrey, we love you!!” The entry referenced entertaining Epstein’s “interesting” friends and included a photo of Mandelson in swim trunks.
Mandelson, who knew Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell, maintains no awareness of Epstein’s crimes. His spokesman expressed regret over the association, noting meetings occurred no more than five or six times. In January, Mandelson issued an apology to Epstein’s victims: “I was wrong to believe him following his conviction and to continue my association with him afterwards. I apologise unequivocally for doing so to the women and girls who suffered.”
