Keyboard Revival Targets Modern Communication Needs
As touchscreen dominance continues, a team of mobile industry veterans has introduced a smartphone featuring a physical keyboard designed for enhanced productivity. The newly unveiled Communicator device marks a strategic return to tactile typing, spearheaded by former BlackBerry executives through their company Clicks.
From Accessory to Standalone Device
The development follows Clicks’ earlier Power Keyboard attachment—a slide-out peripheral with wireless charging capabilities that connects to existing smartphones. “Smartphones have become really good at many things,” explained Clicks co-founder Jeff Gadway, former head of marketing at BlackBerry. “But when you’re good at everything, you’re not great at anything in particular.”
Gadway emphasized the keyboard’s functional advantages: “Whether it’s the auditory feedback or the actual feeling of the buttons, users can type with more confidence and precision.”
Designed for Focused Communication
The Communicator represents a complete reimagining of keyboard-equipped devices. Key features include:
– Ergonomic, contoured keys optimized for comfortable typing
– Customizable notification light system for priority contacts
– Android 16 operating system with Google Play Store access
– 3.5mm audio jack and rear-facing camera
“We’re addressing users who want better communication tools—people focused on taking action rather than doomscrolling,” Gadway stated. The device positions itself as a secondary phone option, minimizing distractions common in content-oriented smartphones.
Unexpected Demographic Appeal
Early interest appears to span multiple generations. “The option of having physical keys is always great,” remarked one technology user during product testing. Others noted nostalgic appeal and frustration with touchscreen responsiveness issues.
Surprisingly, nearly half of pre-order customers reportedly lack prior experience with physical phone keyboards. “Forty-five per cent of our customers have never typed on buttons before,” Gadway revealed, suggesting younger users may be seeking alternative tech relationships.
The Communicator is currently available for pre-order at $399 USD, with shipments expected later this year. As mobile technology continues evolving, this keyboard-centric approach demonstrates ongoing demand for specialized communication tools.
