Pokemon Princess Denies AI Rumors, Reveals £90M Card Collection

Jolina Gisèle, a 20-year-old self-proclaimed ‘Pokémon Princess,’ has stepped into the spotlight to address skepticism surrounding her extraordinary collection of Pokémon trading cards, valued at an estimated £90 million. Amidst rumors that she might be an artificial construct or a brand ambassador, Gisèle sat down for a glamorous photoshoot and an interview to share the story behind her immense hoard, which she claims comprises 60,000 cards, including ultra-rare items like the shadowless Charizard and coveted ‘Illustrator’ editions.

From Rural Switzerland to a Swiss Vault

Gisèle’s fascination with Pokémon cards began in her childhood in rural Switzerland. She recounts how the trading card game fostered a unique sense of unity among children of various ages, providing a common ground for interaction that she found particularly appealing. “I liked that kids from all different ages came together and they traded the cards. The cooler, older kids, and me in the first grade,” Gisèle explained. “Friendships formed. The boys always had football cards, but for us girls, there was never a thing that created such unity.”

Her father, Urs, a man who identifies as an AI security entrepreneur and trained engineer, supported his daughter’s burgeoning interest. He shared that Pokémon provided a welcome diversion from his work, offering a shared activity that brought them closer. “I was working a lot and then coming home and nobody wanted to talk about mathematics or physics. Pokémon was something which brought us together,” he said.

The Evolution of a Passion into an Obsession

Initially, Gisèle’s passion was centered on the game itself, while her father focused on the collecting aspect. Over time, collecting also became a significant part of her own engagement with the hobby. Her father instilled in her the importance of preserving the cards’ condition, advising her not to handle them excessively. “My dad taught me that I shouldn’t play with the cards too much to keep the condition good,” she noted.

The collection remained relatively modest until the mid-2010s. Following this period, Gisèle and her father began actively seeking out increasingly rare and valuable cards, often through online platforms like eBay. This intensified pursuit led to a significant expansion of the collection, with packages arriving daily. Gisèle admitted that the scale of their acquisition began to concern her and her mother.

“At some point, I thought that my dad might have overdone it a bit. My mother and I were a bit scared that we spent so much money on the cards,” Gisèle confessed. Her father echoed this sentiment, describing how the hobby became all-encompassing: “Every Swiss franc we didn’t need went into Pokémon. Everywhere in the house was Pokémon; you could open doors and the cards were there.”

Dispelling the ‘Fake AI’ Rumors

The sheer magnitude and reported value of Gisèle’s collection have naturally attracted skepticism, leading some to question its authenticity or her identity, with theories ranging from her being an AI construct to a brand ambassador. To counter these claims, Gisèle spoke with Tatler magazine, aiming to clarify the origins and nature of her collection.

She detailed the impressive contents of her vault, which reportedly includes approximately 180 Mews and Mewtwos, 208 Charizards, and 260 Pikachus. Among the most prized possessions are the shadowless Charizard, which can command prices up to £740,000, and two rare ‘Illustrator’ editions. The value of such cards has surged dramatically in recent years, particularly since the pandemic, as the market for vintage collectibles has boomed.

The Future of the Collection

Despite the immense value and the years of dedication invested, Gisèle and her family are now considering selling the entire collection. Gisèle expressed that the joy has diminished as the collection has become less accessible and more of a logistical challenge. “It’s just not as fun as it used to be because it’s so out of reach now. It’s not in our cupboards any more,” she stated.

She believes the most special aspect of their collection is its completeness, having amassed every single card, a feat that required considerable time, effort, and dedication. “The really special thing is that we have every single card and that took so much time, effort and dedication. It would be such a shame to break it apart,” Gisèle remarked.

Information about Gisèle herself remains somewhat elusive, with limited public records available prior to her recent visibility. The family’s decision to potentially part with such a significant collection comes at a time when the Pokémon card market is experiencing unprecedented growth. For context, the current Guinness World Record for the largest Pokémon card collection is held by brothers Owen and Conner Grey, who possess 43,339 cards.

A Glimpse into the Pokémon Card Market

The market for vintage Pokémon cards has seen exponential growth, especially since the global pandemic. This surge in popularity has driven up the value of rare cards significantly. For instance, a rare Pikachu Illustrator card, similar to those in Gisèle’s collection, reportedly sold for approximately £12 million in February. The shadowless Charizard card, a staple in many high-value collections, can fetch prices as high as £740,000, underscoring the immense financial potential within the hobby.

Gisèle’s story highlights not only a personal journey into a unique collecting world but also sheds light on the substantial economic landscape that has developed around nostalgic trading card games. Her efforts to clarify the nature of her collection aim to set the record straight amidst a public fascinated by its scale and value.
