Boston Red Sox Make Major Staff Changes
The Boston Red Sox have dismissed longtime manager Alex Cora following a disappointing start to the MLB season. The team also parts ways with hitting coach Peter Fatse, third-base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin.
Game-planning coach Jason Varitek, a two-time World Series champion with the Red Sox, transitions to a new role within the organization.
Recent Performance and Decision Timing
This shakeup occurs hours after the Red Sox crushed the Baltimore Orioles 17-1 on Saturday, ending a four-game skid. Despite the win, the team’s record sits at 10-17, placing them last in the AL East. They recently suffered a three-game sweep at Fenway Park by rivals the New York Yankees.
Chad Tracy, manager of Boston’s Triple-A affiliate in Worcester, steps in as interim manager.
Cora’s Tenure and Legacy
Cora, who managed the Red Sox in two stints since 2021, guided the team to a World Series championship in 2018. The 50-year-old leaves Fenway Park with a 619-541 record.
Red Sox owner John Henry issued a statement expressing gratitude: “Alex Cora led this organization to one of the greatest seasons in Red Sox history in 2018, and for that, and the many years that followed, he will always have our deepest gratitude. He has had a lasting impact on this team and on this city. He has led on and off the field in so many important ways.”
Henry added: “These decisions are never easy, but this one is especially difficult given what Alex has meant to the Red Sox since the day he arrived. I want to thank Alex, our coaches, and their families for everything they have given to this organization. They have been part of this club in a way that goes beyond the field, and they will always have our respect and gratitude.”
