Arrests Follow Claims of Vandalism at Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
Multiple individuals have been arrested in connection with alleged vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, according to recent statements. The incident occurs amidst ongoing issues with a multi-million-dollar renovation project aimed at transforming the historic pool’s appearance.
Renovation Backfires: From Blue to Green and Peeling
A recently completed $14.2 million project intended to give the Reflecting Pool an “American flag blue” hue has encountered significant problems. Despite the ambitious renovation, the pool’s water has quickly turned green with algae, and the new blue paint lining the bottom has begun to peel away.
President Donald Trump expressed frustration over the situation, posting on social media, “We’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool. Just like three days ago, they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool, they’ve also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.” He did not provide specific evidence to support these claims of vandalism.
Law Enforcement Response and Citizen Detainment
Following the President’s remarks, Park Police announced the arrest of “multiple individuals for vandalizing our Nations magnificent Reflecting Poll,” later correcting a spelling error to “Pool.” The President commented, “Who would do such a thing? These are very serious crimes having to do with the destruction of National Monuments. Years in jail!”
One of those arrested has been identified as David Hearn, a 67-year-old Maryland resident. Hearn, a former Olympic canoe racer, stated he was a “curious citizen” who stopped to examine the peeling paint. He reported briefly touching a loose piece of the coating before being detained by National Guard troops and Park Police for approximately five hours. He was later released and is reportedly seeking legal counsel, with a court appearance scheduled for next month.
Hearn described the detached paint as “very rubbery.” The Washington Post was the first to report on his arrest.
Broader Context and Allegations
The pool currently displays visible clouds of algae in its green water, with large sections of the blue paint detaching from the bottom. President Trump has suggested a deliberate effort to undermine the renovation, stating, “No different than the chemicals that were used on the National Mall, they used something similar in the Reflecting Pool to try to destroy and demean our beautiful work.”
This statement appears to reference the discovery of large numbers, “86 47,” etched into discolored grass on the National Mall the week prior. Authorities investigating that matter suggested the numbers could have been intended as a threat, with “86” potentially being slang for “getting rid of someone.” The number 47 refers to the potential next presidential term.
These events unfold as the Reflecting Pool undergoes redevelopment in anticipation of the upcoming America 250 celebrations.
