A 52-year-old man from Regina lands in jail following a disturbing video chat incident where he exposed himself while a five-year-old girl slept naked in the same room. An overseas tip from a concerned stranger prompted swift police action, leading to his arrest and conviction.
Disturbing Video Chat Incident
On July 28, 2025, the man connected via a random video chat platform with a stranger in Cyprus. He livestreamed himself naked and masturbating, with the young girl visible and asleep on a nearby bed. The observer, deeply alarmed, gathered details suggesting the man was in Saskatchewan and promptly alerted authorities in Saskatoon.
The Cyprus resident, a professional clown passionate about children’s rights, flagged the behavior immediately. “He cared deeply about the rights of children,” officials noted during proceedings.
Police Response and Arrest
Investigators traced the man to Regina and arrived at his home, finding him and the girl both naked and asleep in the bedroom. Officers arrested him on charges of making child sexual abuse material, though he later pleaded guilty to exposing himself for a sexual purpose. The more serious charge was withdrawn as part of the plea deal.
A publication ban shields the child’s identity to protect her privacy.
Sentencing and Justification
The court imposed a joint recommendation of nine months in jail followed by two years of probation. Crown prosecutor Colleen Hepburn explained the sentence’s rationale, noting trial challenges including the key witness’s location in Cyprus and potential credibility issues. “There would have been issues taking the matter to trial,” she stated, emphasizing the need to spare the victim and family further trauma.
Despite the man’s prior record lacking similar offenses, officials stressed the act’s severity. “Children are our most vulnerable citizens, and what he did is quite distressing,” Hepburn added.
Defense Perspective and Conditions
Defense lawyer Nicholas Robinson highlighted his client’s counseling efforts since the charges. “He would like to take responsibility and apologize to the court. His intention was not to harm anyone,” Robinson said, describing it as “a good person who made a mistake.”
Judge Steven Schiefner approved the sentence, imposing strict probation terms: no unsupervised contact with anyone under 16, bans from child-frequented areas like parks and pools, no pornography access, and device restrictions except for work or school. The man must submit to warrantless searches up to three times monthly and complete sexual offender programming.
“My thoughts are with the victim’s family. I hope everybody can heal,” Schiefner remarked.
