Manchester United academy defender Rhys Bennett has departed the club after 16 years, securing a permanent move to League Two outfit Fleetwood Town. The 22-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Fleetwood’s Highbury Stadium, expressed gratitude for his time at United while vowing to advance his career.
Bennett’s Journey and Loan Success
Bennett featured in two loan spells with Fleetwood during the previous campaign, appearing in 38 matches and netting two goals. He also gained experience through a six-month loan at Stockport County earlier in 2024. Upon finalizing his transfer, Bennett reflected on his development: “I spent 16 years there, and they helped me every step of the way. I’m really thankful to everyone for helping me grow, on and off the pitch.”
In an Instagram post announcing his exit, Bennett shared his emotions: “After 16 years at Man United, my time has come to an end. Can’t even put into words how appreciative I am of the people that have helped me on and off the pitch throughout my whole time at the club. I wish everyone the best. Ready to kick on and grow even more as a player and as a person.”
Support from Fellow Academy Players
The announcement drew warm responses from several Manchester United academy prospects. Chido Obi wished him well: “All the best my guy.” Former Reds academy forward Joe Hugill added: “Bensonnn what a guy, all the best brother.” Ethan Wheatley echoed the sentiment: “What a guy, all the best brother.”
Shea Lacey called him “My brother, all the best benno,” while Finley McAllister encouraged: “Love ya son! Go get em kid.” Daniel Gore motivated him further: “All the best brother. Go show em!!”
Bennett joined Manchester United at age 10 and progressed through the ranks, captaining the youth side to victory in the FA Youth Cup in 2022. He scored in the final against Nottingham Forest, marking a highlight of his academy tenure.
Additional Academy Departures
Manchester United has also confirmed the exits of Joe Hugill and Toby Collyer this week, signaling further changes in the youth setup.
