Manchester City midfielder Rodri calls on fans to review his complete interview after expressing openness to a potential La Liga return before his career ends.
Context Behind the Comments
Following the Carabao Cup victory, the 29-year-old linked up with the Spanish national team for the season’s final international break. In discussions with Spanish media, Rodri addressed the idea of joining Real Madrid, despite his Atletico Madrid background.
“There have been many players who have gone down that path, right? And especially not directly, but over time,” he stated. “For me, you can’t turn down the best clubs in the world. They have a fanbase that really goes all out for them, and the Bernabeu is always incredible, a stadium that’s very imposing.”
He added, “I’d like to return [to Spain], yes, obviously.”
Addressing the Backlash
With his contract running until 2027, these remarks sparked concerns over a possible departure this summer or in 2027. Rodri has since clarified the situation, emphasizing missing context.
“I’m used to it,” he explained. “If, out of a 50-minute interview, they cut out whatever they want… in the end, I don’t have much more to say. I’m a person who speaks directly. The interview is there if you want to listen to it in its entirety… and not just certain snippets.”
Praise for Premier League and Focus Ahead
Rodri expressed admiration for La Liga while praising the Premier League: “I think it’s a thrilling league but at the same time very demanding, meaning it pushes you to the limit.”
After seven years in England, he noted, “I’m noticing the passage of time, but for the moment I’m very happy there. I’m currently recovering from an injury, and what worries me right now is my feeling, my level, how to get back to my previous level.”
Contract talks loom, but he prioritizes recovery ahead of the World Cup. “Not the contract issue, that will come… Obviously, there will be a point where we’ll have to sit down and talk.”
Rodri returns to Manchester City after Tuesday’s friendly against Egypt, preparing for Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final versus Liverpool.
