A recent discussion on the ‘A Right Royal Podcast’ delved into significant developments concerning the British Royal Family, including King Charles’s official stance on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s public engagements, security concerns for Prince Harry, and Prince George’s notable first day at Eton College. Royal Editor Emily Nash provided insights into these key events.

King Charles Clarifies Status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

King Charles III has issued a formal statement through the Lord Chamberlain to address public inquiries regarding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s upcoming charity visits and engagements in the UK. The statement aims to clarify their current relationship with the Royal Family and delineate responsibilities for security arrangements.

Emily Nash explained that the statement serves to inform the public that Harry and Meghan are no longer considered working members of the Royal Family. Consequently, any questions concerning their engagements should be directed to their own office, while security matters are to be handled by the relevant police authorities. This public declaration, Nash noted, is intended to prevent confusion, especially as the couple prepares for more UK-based activities and potential renewed ties with British charities. The Palace also anticipated that a private communication might be leaked, making a public statement a more controlled approach to setting expectations.

Sources close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with being labeled “private citizens,” preferring the term “public figures.” They were also sensitive to the statement’s omission of any reference to them remaining members of the Royal Family, irrespective of their public duties. Nash highlighted the ongoing dynamic of “tit-for-tat” communication and emphasized the King’s clear directive regarding the “abeyance” of their HRH titles, signifying they are not to be used.

Prince Harry’s Security Review and the Invictus Games

The Royal Editor also touched upon the ongoing review of Prince Harry’s security arrangements by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC). Nash indicated that this assessment, which should have occurred much earlier, has become more pressing due to Harry’s presence in the UK. While acknowledging potential delays in such assessments due to governmental matters, she suggested that Harry might receive some level of protection, though perhaps not to the extent he desires. His team has consistently argued for a dedicated liaison with the Metropolitan Police, a contrast to the 24/7 armed protection he experienced for years.

The situation surrounding the Invictus Games has also seen an unexpected development. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Commander of Uganda’s armed forces and son of the president, announced Uganda’s withdrawal from the Games via social media. Kainerugaba cited a desire to show loyalty to King Charles and avoid any actions that might not have his approval. Nash clarified that there is no indication King Charles disapproves of the Invictus Games, which he has supported. However, she suggested this decision highlights the diplomatic complexities arising from the perceived tension between the King and his son, Prince Harry. Kainerugaba’s public statement, expressing support for the monarch, underscores the challenges Harry’s flagship organization faces due to the ongoing family dynamics.

Separately, reports suggest Prince Harry is exploring the possibility of a project about his late mother, Princess Diana, potentially involving former friends and associates of hers. This initiative, if realized, could offer a new perspective on Diana’s life and legacy.

King Charles’s Public Engagements and Diplomatic Challenges

King Charles has faced a demanding week, including a controversial edited video posted by former U.S. President Donald Trump. The video misrepresented an incident where the King showed kindness to a fainting individual at an Asda distribution center, portraying it negatively. Nash recounted the actual event, where Charles demonstrated concern and ensured the person received assistance.

Additionally, the Jamaican government is reportedly preparing to lodge a petition with the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council concerning slavery reparations. This issue is expected to be a significant topic during the King’s upcoming visit to the Caribbean for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting. The King has expressed a commitment to understanding such issues and seeking ways to address historical injustices.

The King also marked the fourth anniversary of his accession to the throne privately. This somber occasion coincides with the anniversary of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II’s, death, a tradition she also observed by spending the day in quiet reflection.

Prince George’s Debut at Eton College

A significant personal milestone for the Royal Family was Prince George’s commencement of his studies at Eton College. Emily Nash, who was present on his first day, described the event as special, noting George’s apparent confidence and enthusiasm. She contrasted his experience with that of his father, Prince William, whose first day in 1995 was marked by a larger media presence and a more challenging personal backdrop.

Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, have reportedly prepared George for this transition through open discussions, ensuring he feels comfortable and understood the public interest surrounding him. Nash emphasized that admission to Eton is academically rigorous, suggesting George’s entry reflects his own capabilities rather than solely his lineage. The change in family dynamic at home, with George now at boarding school, is also a notable adjustment for the family.

Regarding Princess Charlotte’s education, Nash affirmed that the Prince and Princess of Wales prioritize selecting schools that best suit each child’s individual needs and personalities, rather than adhering to a one-size-fits-all approach.

Prince William’s Busy Schedule

Prince William has also had a demanding week, balancing his royal duties with new initiatives. He represented the King at a state funeral for a European head of state and a royal. Furthermore, he launched a significant new initiative, “On Your Side,” aimed at suicide prevention in sports, enlisting the support of prominent figures like Harry Kane and Alan Shearer. This campaign seeks to encourage open conversations about mental health and prevent suicides, a serious issue affecting thousands annually.
