Reports indicate that the individual accusing BBC Radio 2 star Scott Mills of historic sexual offenses maintained contact with him for eight years following the alleged incidents between 1997 and 2000.
Mills, 53, was recently dismissed from the BBC after new information surfaced regarding his personal conduct. The accuser, a boy under 16 at the time, reportedly remained friendly with Mills until around 2006.
Contact Continued Post-Allegations
A source familiar with Mills during the 2000s revealed that many of his friends knew about the young man. ‘Scott stayed in touch with him, and I first heard about him in 2001,’ the source stated. ‘They used to see each other, and Scott was friendly with him like he was with a lot of people. I’m sure they were still in contact until around 2006. It suggests they were still on good terms, so I’m not sure what prompted the investigation.’
Police Probe and No Charges
Metropolitan Police launched an investigation in 2017 after receiving the case from Hampshire Police in 2016. The allegations involved serious sexual offenses against a teenage boy aged 13 to 16. Mills fully cooperated, attending a London police station for questioning in 2018. Prosecutors reviewed the evidence file but determined insufficient grounds for charges, closing the case in 2019.
Mills Breaks Silence
In a statement released through his lawyers, Mills addressed the matter directly: ‘The recent announcement that I am no longer contracted to the BBC has led to the publication of rumour and speculation. In response to this the Metropolitan Police has made a statement, which I confirm relates to me. An allegation was made against me in 2016 of a historic sexual offence which was the subject of a police investigation in which I fully cooperated and responded to in 2018. As the police have stated, a file of evidence was submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service, which determined that the evidential threshold had not been met to bring charges. Since the investigation related to an allegation that dates back nearly 30 years and the police investigation was closed seven years ago, I hope that the public and the media will understand and respect my wish not to make any further public comment on this matter. I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have reached out to me with kindness, my former colleagues and my beloved listeners, who I greatly miss.’
BBC’s Awareness and Termination
The BBC confirmed awareness of the police investigation since 2017 but terminated Mills’ contracts on March 27 after obtaining new information in recent weeks. A spokesperson stated: ‘Scott Mills had a long career across the BBC, he was hugely popular and we know the news this week has come as a shock and surprise to many. What we can confirm is that in recent weeks, we obtained new information relating to Scott and we spoke directly with him. As a result, the BBC acted decisively in line with our culture and values and terminated his contracts on Friday, March 27.’
The corporation noted ongoing efforts to clarify internal knowledge from 2017 and emphasized commitments to improved standards following a culture review.
Police-BBC Communications
Metropolitan Police confirmed multiple contacts with the BBC since 2017, including discussions as recent as last week. A spokesperson said: ‘We have been in contact with the man’s employer on several occasions, between the start of our investigation in 2017 and the present day. It would not be appropriate to share the specific nature of these discussions.’
Recent External Concerns
In May 2025, former BBC presenter Anna Brees contacted executives about alleged inappropriate communications involving Mills and inquired on safeguarding complaints. The BBC acknowledged receiving the query but failing to investigate, stating: ‘We received a Press query in 2025 which included limited information. This should have been followed up and we should have asked further questions. We apologise for this and will look into why this did not happen.’
