A Sydney woman who survived a severe shark attack has shared the harrowing thoughts that raced through her mind as the animal gripped her leg. Leah Stewart, a 34-year-old teacher and mother of a one-year-old daughter, recounted the terrifying encounter that occurred on June 13 at Coogee Beach.

The Attack at Coogee Beach

Stewart was swimming in the waters off Coogee Beach, a popular spot in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, when she was attacked by a shark. The encounter left her with life-threatening injuries, necessitating a prolonged hospital stay and the eventual amputation of her arm. In her first public interview since the incident, Stewart described the immediate fear that consumed her as the shark seized her leg.

A Mother’s Deepest Fear

Speaking to 60 Minutes Australia, Stewart revealed that her primary concern in that critical moment was her young daughter, August. “It was holding onto my leg, then I just thought of August,” she stated, her voice trembling with emotion. “I thought, ‘She’s not going to have a mum. She’s going to grow up without a mum.’” The prospect of her child facing life without her mother was an unbearable thought, and she expressed her deep distress over the possibility.

Stewart spent over two weeks in critical condition in the hospital following the attack. The severity of her injuries ultimately led doctors to perform an amputation. Reflecting on the shark itself, Stewart described its appearance as “horrific,” a “monster” she would never forget.

The Road to Recovery and Gratitude

Despite the immense physical and emotional trauma, Leah Stewart is now focusing on her recovery and rebuilding her life. She expressed optimism about regaining a sense of normalcy, stating in a message shared via a GoFundMe fundraiser, “After what has been an incredibly difficult few months, I’m so happy that I’ve progressed enough to build some independence, and I can finally see some light after all of this.”

Stewart has been actively engaged in her rehabilitation, determined to return to a semblance of her former life. She acknowledged that the journey ahead is long but described her recovery as “remarkable.” She attributed a significant part of her progress to the overwhelming global support she has received. “A huge part of that is because of the absolute army of love, support, prayers and encouragement surrounding my family and me from all over the world,” she said.

The GoFundMe campaign established to assist with her medical expenses garnered substantial donations, raising over £293,256 before closing. Stewart conveyed profound gratitude for the generosity shown, which has provided the means for her recovery, enabled her family to remain in their home, and offered options for future medical treatments.

Looking Towards the Future

With a newfound appreciation for life, Stewart is determined to make the most of this “second chance.” She expressed a desire to give back, stating, “As I get better, I know I’ll make something of this second chance and aim to give back even more in generosity, care and love.” Her experience, while traumatic, has instilled in her a powerful drive to contribute positively to the world around her.

The Coogee Beach shark attack serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of marine encounters. Stewart’s resilience and her focus on her daughter and future contributions highlight the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Her story underscores the importance of community support and the profound impact of generosity during times of crisis.
