Chad Townsend, coach of the Cronulla Sharks SG Ball Cup under-19 team, faces backlash from supporters after departing for Las Vegas during his squad’s early-season struggles.
Team’s Rough Start and Coach’s Absence
The premiership-winning halfback’s team kicked off their nine-week campaign with three straight losses. Townsend jetted off to cover the NRL season opener, leaving critics questioning his commitment.
Medical Incident on Flight to Las Vegas
En route to Sin City, the 35-year-old suffered hot and cold flushes, causing him to faint. A doctor and nurse on board provided treatment. Despite the scare, Townsend fulfilled his broadcasting role for the Sports Entertainment Network (SEN) during the double-header at Allegiant Stadium.
He later posted on X, assuring fans of his recovery.
Fans Voice Frustration on Social Media
Supporters expressed dismay online, viewing the trip as neglect amid the team’s winless streak.
“Coach of the SG Ball team was headed to Vegas to do a vlog one-third of the way through the season while his team had yet to win a game. Guilty conscience perhaps,” one commenter wrote.
“Aren’t you meant to be coaching this weekend? 0-3 – not a good start. I’d faint too,” another added.
“Hey Chad, shouldn’t you be back at home with your team? 0-3 to start the season and you jet off to Vegas,” a third remarked.
“Aren’t you meant to be coaching SG Ball? You doing it via Zoom?” questioned a fan.
Sharks Claim First Victory Without Coach
Adding irony, Townsend’s squad secured their initial 2026 win—a commanding 20-0 shutout over the St George Illawarra Dragons at Sharks Stadium—while he was abroad. The coach also recorded content for his BearBet-sponsored podcast during the trip.
Townsend, who retired last year after six games with the Sydney Roosters, returns for the weekend clash against the unbeaten Roosters at home.
